2K Picks Up The Darkness News

Starbreeze's FPS picked up the Take-Two subsidiary following the premium title pull out by Majesco...

2K Games has today announced that it's acquired The Darkness, a next-gen FPS title from Chronicle of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay developers, Starbreeze Studios. Having originally been picked up by Majesco Entertainment in March 2005, the game has been looking for a new publishing home since Majesco's pull out from the premium market earlier in the year.

Based on the comic book franchise from Top Cow, The Darkness sees players take the role of Jackie Estacado, a mafia hitman who finds himself possessed by the demonic force known only as The Darkness on his 21st birthday. The possession has left him with the ability to access special powers as he fights against the Francetti mafia. A feature film based on the franchise is also in the works, co-produced by Platinum Studios and Dimension Films, with an expected movie release in 2007.

"The Darkness video game is a dynamic first person shooter that allows players to call upon the forces of the evil underworld as they fight in gritty, urban environments," said Christoph Hartmann, Managing Director of 2K Games. "Armed with an arsenal of guns, gamers will battle an array of demonic creatures and supernatural powers. The dark and dynamic comic book storyline will translate perfectly into first-person action that fans will love."

"The Darkness is a great franchise and we're proud to be developing the game with 2K Games, Starbreeze and Union Entertainment," said Matt Hawkins, Top Cow's President and COO.

The Darkness is set to arrive during winter 2006/7; we'll have more news shortly...

It's a real shame it didnt have another 6months in development because it just needed that time to tidy up all the bugs with the AI.
