A "near-endless" Sci-Fi experience from the creators of Brothers in Arms...
With development approaching the final stages on Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, 2K Games have been quick to secure the publishing rights to Gearbox Software's latest title, Borderlands, on the Xbox 360, PlayStation3, and Games for Windows.
"Borderlands represents an important evolutionary leap in game design and technology," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "By utilizing revolutionary new technology to create thousands of unique, randomly generated missions, weapons and situations, Borderlands will raise the bar for next gen action games."
Promising to blend deep character progression and hundreds of thousands of weapons in a Sci-Fi first-person-shooter, the developers behind numerous Half Life titles and a Halo adaptation cast little doubt about their ambition to surpass such heavyweights. Despite a lack of specific information, Borderlands' most striking early feature is a groundbreaking means of content generation. Whilst we'd expect nothing less then superlatives from an official press release, we'd tend to believe Gearbox' claims when it comes to a "near-endless" variety in the game's missions, environments, enemies, weapons, item drops and character customisation.
Following Halo 3 and HAZE, Borderlands will offer online co-operative multiplayer with the option to jump in and out at anytime, though it's unclear exactly how many players Gearbox is targeting at this stage. Planned for release during the holiday 2008 period there's still some time to wait, however that hasn't deterred 2K Games from announcing the title as the first in an all-new franchise.
"Borderlands creates a universe of gameplay that goes far beyond anything anyone would expect. We're tapping into every bit of Gearbox Software's experience with the biggest science fiction video game franchises, then taking everything way past the next level," said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. "The team at 2K Games shares our passion for pushing boundaries in gameplay and storytelling and are absolutely perfect partners for Borderlands."
