Those worms are back in a game that may look familiar at first!!!
I know what youāre thinking, on initial inspection Worms Blast looks familiar, its primary gameplay focus may make many think of Puzzle Bobble and other games of that ilk. But has the team that brought us the innovative Worms done the unthinkable, slapped the Worms license on a tried-and-tested game and called it their own⦠Well yes and no, it may look strangely familiar, but when you try it youāll notice the differences immediately!
Essentially Worms Blast is like Puzzle Bobble, you shoot differently coloured blocks to remove the same coloured ones above you, whilst the blocks gradually drop down as the game progresses, and the water that you float on rises. However there are a number of differences, some subtle others not so that make this clearly a game of itās own.
Firstly your character floats along in a boat, giving you the ability to move left and right, as well as change the angle of fire and how hard the shot is. Secondly whilst the bazooka is the primary weapon, youāll have access (thanks to the falling crates) to a wide variety of deadly arsenal, that each adds a vast tactical element to the whole proceedings. Being Team 17 these crates contain a variety of weird and wacky weapons, ranging from sending sea monsters over to kill your opponent, to radioing in for medical help.
As well as firing at the blocks above, the divider that splits you and your opponent opens up occasionally, giving you the opportunity to sink his ship with a few sneaky missiles, or change their blocks into dead blocks, which they have to re-shoot before they can get rid of them.
The new elements add so much to the core puzzle bobble gameplay, that the end feeling is that it is a completely different game. Thereās a whole strategy and tactical element that isnāt found in those games, whilst the classic worms humour and action will instantly appeal to fans of the franchise.
To complement this mode are a variety of puzzle and tournament modes, that I have yet to get into as Iāve been having too much fun with the basic game mode. To be honest from first inspection they seem to be stuck on, and donāt offer nearly as much fun as the standard game however weāll have a closer look when we review the title.
