Come on in, the water is lovely. CHECK out our preview of this aquatic racer FROM Nintendo.

WaveRace was a launch title for the N64 an excellent demonstration of the ā“ then ā“ powerful machine, so much so that to date the stunning water effects have not been matched. It is very fitting that WaveRace should launch with the GameCube demonstrating the graphic prowess of this new machine, as well as being a whole load of fun to boot.

Wave Race: Blue Storm, to use its full title, is not just a straight graphical upgrade of Wave Race 64. Although the old courses still feature they are not exactly the same, it has been five years and things change overtime. New buoy layouts as well as brand new shortcuts will liven up the old courses for those familiar with them. There will of course be new tracks but these are being kept under wraps, along with the more extreme weather conditions. One would hope that NST still has something to surprise us with, the E3 showing being a mere appetiser for the finished game.

Perhaps the biggest gameplay change directly as a result of the hardware shift has been the addition of dynamic weather effects. There is everything from calm gentle lakes to full on thunderstorms in the open ocean with almost tsunami size waves crashing all around you. Naturally this makes it rather tricky for you to stay on your jet ski, but well, thatās half the fun isnāt it? NST seem rather proud of their tsunami effect, and given that the weather can, and will, change halfway though the race it seems like this is a great addition.

Graphically things are looking good, very good. The waves are now rendered way into the distance - on the N64 game you could see where the waves stopped being drawn. The characters have become more detailed and better animated with stunts looking even smoother than before. For some reason all of the riders seem to have lost their crash helmets, which one assumes is for aesthetic reasons. The water itself is the real star with the waves rolling and crashing, well, like waves. More impressive is when it starts to rain and no only does rain splash and drip down the camera but you can see the drops hitting the water and causing ripples, from every single drop of rain. Impressive for sure, throw in the reflection and refraction effects and you have a stunning piece of software.
