WarioWare Touched Mini Review

The quick-fire micro-game antics of WarioWare have been entertaining us now on the GameBoy Advance and the GameCube, so it comes as no surprise that one of the European launch titles would be a WarioWare game. But with quick-fix titles such as Polarium and Project Rub also forming part of the raft of launch titles, is the DS in danger of becoming little more than a 21st Century Game & Watch?

With over 180 micro-games to play and a toy-room filled with quite frankly bizarre âactivitiesâ such as spinning a yo-yo and a Wario version of the SNESâ Mario Paint there is certainly a lot of things to do in WarioWare.

If youâve played a WarioWare title in the past then you know what youâre in for â“ if you havenât then the game will all first confuse into muttering with increasing discomfort âWhat the hell am I supposed to be doing???â Of course the added twist in terms of gameplay is that you use the DS stylus to play, which once again makes the DS seem little more than the videogame equivalent of a PDAâ¦but without the PDA feature (yet.)

The games are grouped into a number of sections with various characters acting as cohesion to the randomness of it all. For example, youâll be able to play with a series of micro-games that are all influenced from retro Nintendo classics from Super Mario Bros, Metroid, and Legend of Zelda on the NES, right back to the Game & Watch titles of the early 1980s. After completing a round of micro-games youâll have to defeat a Boss Game before starting another round micro-game albeit at a higher speed than beforeâ¦and so on.

One of the key features missing from the game is a multiplayer mode, especially in light of the fact that the DSâs Wi-Fi capabilities have been heavily marketed. Itâs true to say that it does have the odd one or two multiplayer mini-activities included but 99.999% of the game is for the solo gamer only â“ a missed opportunity particularly after the GameCubeâs four player option.

Itâs probably the best description of WarioWare Touched that we can give â“ a bit of fun, not to be taken seriously. Itâs probably a mantra that DS developers should hang from the their monitors and say before they sleep at night, because itâs these type of games that will succeed on the DS as they have an addictiveness and simplicity that confused gameplay methods in other DS titles just wonât be able to mange. WarioWare Touched might not have quite the same âaweâ factor that it had when it first debuted on the GBA but itâs fun to play and will while away the hours away from home.
