WWE Smackdown vs RAW 2006 Mini Preview

THQ and Yukes unite once again to bring wrestling fans a treat...

OK so when we last checked out the world of wrestling it was known as a different name and the likes of Hulk Hogan ruled supreme (before his comeback that is). The appeal of a big sweaty pantomime may have diminished as the years wore by, however the āsportā remains big particularly in terms of videogame adaptations and once again THQ and Yukes Interactive are back with WWE: Smackdown vs RAW 2006.

Promising a host of new features, online play and a wealth of improvements Smackdown vs RAW 2006 promises to be the best in the series to date, so we picked up an early preview build to put it to the test and discover whether the childhood passion can be rekindled.

The bulk of the game lies in the Season mode, which follows two different plotlines across the different brands. Fans will be happy with the level of presentation and production featured across the season after voicing complaints with the last title. Naturally in between the various cut-scenes comes lots of wrestling action and the opportunity to have an influence over the outcome by making choices at certain points. As you work your way through two seasons youāll also have to win as many belts as possible for both the RAW and Smackdown brands.

PPV fans can expect the whole roster with a wide selection of types featured throughout the game including New Yearās Revolution, Royal Rumble, No way Out, Wrestlemania 21, Backlash, Judgement Day, Vengeance and Taboo Tuesday. A number of new modes have also been introduced such as the Buried Alive match and Fulfil Your Fantasy which replaces the customary Bra and Panties mode.

Right at the start of the bout players can use the right thumbstick to select which type of pre-match scenario they wish, whether thatās staring down the opponents, test of strength, lockup or nothing at all; each requires success in differing mini-games to gain the upper-hand and the first strike.

In the ring veterans will notice the new Stamina system that attempts to crate a balance between new players and experts alike, by depleting a stamina gauge based upon the magnitude of the moves youāre pulling off. Yukes have also added a Momentum gauge which is tied into the reaction from the crowd, based on your performance as a clean or dirty wrestler and also having an affect on the types of moves available to you. Further introductions include the ability to steal your opponents taunt to completely destroy their Momentum, which can often be a crucial factor in the outcome of a match.

Another big addition for this yearās version is the appearance of a General Manager mode. Here players must take control of one of the brands, arrange matches, whilst keeping a balance over various factors such as cost/profit and fatigue. Itās all about ratings and so itās up to you to mastermind rivalries which are great for the fans, whilst youāll also have to keep an eye over such issues as injuries and such. Itās an interesting diversion from the main game and likely to keep WWE fans engrossed for a very long time.

Yukes have done a fantastic job on the visuals resulting in one of the better looking wrestling titles weāve ever seen. Each of the 30+ wrestlers has been brought to the Playstation2 with conviction, whilst the various animations capture the distinction of each style. 3D crowds look absolutely fantastic within the game and help to polish the overall look, whilst the stylish camera movements that accompany killer moves really help to dramatise the overall experience.

A plethora of Create modes allow players to fashion wrestlers, moves, entrances and much, much more⦠Youāll also find a list of challenges in the overhauled 3D locker room, along with the ability to view your belts, increase a custom wrestlers attributes through training and a handful of other features.

TVG will have lots more on WWE: Smackdown vs RAW 2006 in the coming weeksā¦
