THQ unveil the latest title in the popular wrestling series, thankfully there's a number of changes in store...

THQ today unveiled the latest title in its popular WWE Smackdown! series â“ WWE Smackdown! Here Comes the Pain.

Currently in development for the Playstation2 at Yukes Software, THQ have assured us that the developers are carefully taking on-bard criticisms levelled at âSmackdown! Shut Your Mouthâ; as such we can finally expect a visual overhaul, more strategy and tactics to the gameplay, a wider range of individual moves to improve the distinction between different wrestlers, enhanced animation and a stronger, clearer path through the games story.

The new âGrapplingâ based gameplay system features four different types of grapple, each with a corresponding set of moves tailored to that specific grapple i.e. power move set, submission move set, quick move set and signature move set; this should hopefully give a wide range of moves that are individual to each character and help to eliminate the repetitive nature of previous games in the series.

Other enhancements to the gameplay include a new two-button counter system, although specific details on how this works have yet to be released and the ability to drag opponents around the mat before putting a move on them.

Thankfully Yukes are going to lengths to differentiate between the different wrestlers on offer â“ a big complaint levelled at previous titles. Besides ensuring that a wide range of attributes are now being taken into consideration, weâre particularly impressed by the new âweight detectionâ system, which ensures youâll never be able to pick up Big Show with Spike Dudley ever again.

The Submission system has also undergone a significant rework, as players will now have to work opponents different body parts to make them less powerful and more fatigued, before the eventual submission move is applied. A new âTug of Warâ system has been implemented, allowing you to see close up as your opponent desperately attempts to get to the ropes.

Thankfully the god-awful graphics in âWWE Smackdown! Shut Your Mouthâ have been completely overhauled from the ground up. To improve the realism of the series, Yukes have finally included a full 3D crowd, whilst the inclusion of blood should please the legion of WWE fans waiting for the game. Character models have been significantly enhanced, along with their animation to ensure they look as realistic as possible.

THQ have assured us that the Career Mode has been carefully looked at to ease the confusion generated in Smackdown. WWE Smackdown! Here Comes the Pain will feature a wide range of original storylines and a new money system, which allows you to purchase items from an entirely new shop zone.

New game modes include the intriguingly titled âBra and Panty Matchâ, âthe Elimination Chamberâ, âFirst Bloodâ and a fully interactive backstage environment to take the action outside of the ring.

THQ claim that the final game will have over 60 different wrestlers to choose from, and for the first time in the game series will feature âclassicâ wrestlers, similar to those offered in the âLegends of Wrestlingâ series.
