Virtua Fighter 4 Preview

For the first time Sega`s premier fighter arrives on a new console, can it appeal to the masses brought up on a Tekken diet?
Alongside Sonic Adventure 2 on the GameCube, seeing Virtua Fighter 4 on the PS2 is probably one of the bitterest tonics for Sega zealots to taste. Thankfully for the rest of us Yu Suzuki and his team at AM2 have done a fantastic job of converting the NAOMI2 powered arcade title, to the devilishly tough PS2.
āAll I can tell you is that this is one of the best and one of the most complete games that Iāve ever madeā said Yu Suzuki at a recent Press Conference, bold statements indeed when you consider his past pedigree. However glancing at any screenshot youād be hard pressed to disagree with him, Virtua Fighter 4 is set to be one of the best looking PS2 titles ever, and bring a sense of fighting sophistication not previously seen on a Sony machine.
After finishing the arcade version, AM2 got straight to work at the difficult prospect of porting the game to the PS2. However itās not just the graphical quality that has kept the team busy, theyāve also taken the chance to enhance VF4 significantly for the home market.
Joining the Arcade mode will be the usual Versus and Survival modes, however in a sign of wonderful insight AM2 have included an in-depth Training mode to ease PS2 owners into the detailed play mechanics of Virtua Fighter, something theyāre probably not used to with the button bashing antics of Tekken and others of that ilk. In addition to the basic command training, in which commands are prompted on-screen and must then be copied, thereās a free spar mode and more interesting a Trial mode that pits different tasks to the player to help their fighting skills.
Perhaps the most intriguing is the AI mode that allows players to play Sensei to a CPU controlled drone. The aim being to turn this drone into a proficient fighter, by teaching different him moves and techniques. You can then pit your fighter against others in the Survival or Vs mode, where occasionally the game will pause and ask you a question as to how your fighter should proceed; your answers will directly influence the overall ability of your AI protagonist, a fighting tamagotchi if you likeā¦
Visually youāve never seen a PS2 title like this the machine is truly put to the test with the beautifully detailed and light-sourced battlegrounds, add the intricately modelled characters, and you have a game that pushes a reputedly 63 million polygons per second!
For European gamers VF4 will feature the traditional Sega 60Hz option, which is a great touch considering that many PS2 titles donāt support this.
As with the arcade version, over 400 items are featured within the game that can be collected. These are mainly cosmetic items, which can then be used in the extensive Character Edit mode to fully customise the look of your fighter.
