Vietcong: Purple Haze Mini Review

In a year of Vietnam War based releases, itâs inevitable that at some point, youâll find yourself going around in circles, and with the release of Vietcong: Purple Haze, we have done just that.
Purple Haze is, in actual fact, an amalgam 17 missions from the PC releases of âVietcongâ, and the expansion pack, âFist Alphaâ, both of which were released during 2003, and a couple of extra missions thrown in for good measure (and exclusive to the console versions).
The game is also Xbox enabled, with new downloadable maps available to players, as wells as the obvious Multiplayer Modes that will support up to 10 players.
Games developers must be sick of the sight of green jungle foliage this year, and it has to be said that for most part, Vietcong looks like just another âNam FPS; the jungles look nice enough, but they donât stand out from the other titles on offer. All of the sounds are there, and there is good â60s soundtrack, but again â“ it doesnât standout.
The game features a âQuick Matchâ option, which is essentially like playing a Deathmatch game â“ but by yourself; handy if youâre Billy No-Mates, but weâll take the game on Live! thanksâ¦
The animation of the enemy soldiers when you shoot them isnât the best that weâve seen. When you do shoot them, the tend to jump about a bit from one bit of animation to the next, and the transitions between them arenât smooth at all.
If you are a fan of the current crop of FPS titles and you want more of the same, then get the game; itâs not bad at all, but it doesnât offer anything too different. If you are looking for a boundary pushing title, then this isnât it â“ but itâs still fun to play and should keep you happy until a new genre-defining title is released.
