UT2004 - First Impressions Preview

Probably what last year's offer should have been, still UT2004 has left us chanting 'headshot' once again...
Unreal Tournament 2004 made an appearance at this yearâs ECTS, and is rapidly becoming what UT2003 should have been.
Perhaps the biggest innovation comes from a feature that was set to be included in UT2003, but was eventually left out due to time constraints. Players can now take control of a wide range of land, space and air based vehicles, including buggies, tanks, hovercraft, aircraft and many more; not only are these cool to drive around, they also change the dynamic of the game considerably.
To combat this, Epic Games have been hard at work on a new game mode that makes full use of the new vehicles. Entitled âOnslaughtâ, players gather into teams and fight across massive maps that dwarf those featured in previous titles. Because of the sheer size vehicles are a must, whether itâs transporting troops to the front line or serving as a mobile platform to launch devastating attacks. Itâs great to see Epic Games revitalising the franchise after last yearâs less-then-impressive sequel; whilst this mode certainly feels different to the traditional UT experience, fans should quickly warm to the new gaming experience.
As part of the process of building up the franchise, UT2004 will contain everything that was featured in its predecessor, including all the maps, game modes, characters and improvements that featured in the various download packs, whilst also including all-new maps and characters for these existing modes. Mod and mapmakers can rest easy in the fact that UT2004 is completely backwards compatible, so no worries over new features, files or incompatibility issues.
Having bizarrely decided to leave an âAssaultâ mode out of UT2003, fans will be pleased to know that a completely re-designed version will feature in the game, allowing players to defend and attack a base whilst also making full use of the new vehicles. This mode features six new maps, each of which represent key conflicts in the Unreal universe â“ ranging from battles between humans and the dreaded Skaarj, whilst also introducing a new race known as the Hellions â“ an intergalactic biker gang so to speak.
