TVG checks out the latest addition to the TrackMania franchise...
Digital Jesters has come a long way in the last 12 months, and whilst they might still be regarded as a hit and miss publisher, things seem to be changing with many of their games now held in high regard, which is certainly the case with TrackMania: Sunrise.
The first TrackMania and its corresponding data disc were both great efforts and a real pleasure to play, and thankfully Sunrise is more of the same but with a little added polish and a few morsels of extras. The game is a speed-seeking, thrill-inducing, action-packed, online community spirited kind of racing game come editor package that is as easy on the eye as it is to get into from the instant you start playing.
Some well oiled engine charged, tyre bursting, pedal pressed games are so full of embellishments and high production values (not mentioning any names of course) that the subject matter of the cars, their speed and the challenge become so bogged down in its technicalities that it starts to lose its user-friendliness and appeal. Thankfully the gameās developer, Nadeo seems to know exactly what gamers want which means that playing Sunrise offers gamers a chance to experience total immersion coupled with strong appealing gameplay.
Some very precise controls are needed to master the game with players having to correctly anticipate the carās positionings and speed as it glides over some very wide crevasses to land safely on terra firma, but that is all part of the joy of racing and the AI of the other cars is also quite impressive. There are times when the game seems like a cross between Stunt Car Racer and Scalextric with load of touches from other racing games but conversely it does not come across as a compendium of plagiarised ideas.
So with every conceivable racing idea, ala truly innovative tracks, you then have the further extension of the game via the online community which Trackmania is encased around. TrackManiaās name really depicts the real essence of the game, different tracks, different challenges but most times you will find yourself driving like a loon and everything is so over the top you canāt imagine how this can be topped.
