Tony Hawks Pro Skater Review

Tony Hawk grinds to the N64, Nintendo fans rejoice.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was one of the best games on the PlayStation last year, with excellent graphics, a wide range of tricks and locations, but most importantly it was accessible and fun. Skaters and non-skaters found themselves enthralled by this most excellent game, and now it is finally available on the N64, thanks to a conversion from Edge of Reality.

Essentially this is exactly the same game that hit the PlayStation last year, all of the gameplay options are included, so you get the career mode, free skate mode, single session mode and various two player options such as graffiti and horse. All ten of the pro skaters featured look a lot like their real life counterparts and are brought to life via some great, and sometimes punishing animation. There are some liberties taken with the actual tricks that you can pull off, but the arcade like approach works well, and it is very satisfying to pull of a trick with multiple grinds grabs and rotations.

As a conversion this is top notch, the graphics are crisp and detailed, running as smoothly as you would expect. Controls are great, thanks to the N64's analogue stick, in fact the only area to suffer is the music, and that is a direct result of the smaller file size that the cartridge format is inherently limited by. Instead of full length music tracks the N64 features shorter loops, and in some cases the lyrics are taken out leaving just an instrumental. However this does not mean that the sound effects have suffered as well, far from it! Tony Hawk features excellent sound effects that are highly atmospheric, and help emphasise well hit landings, or make you wince at the bone crushing nature of an impact.

This is an excellent port of an already great game and I would heartily recommend this to any N64 owner looking for a game that offers something new and extremely fun.
