Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2x Review

It’s old, it’s not coming out in the UK, but here’s a review for THPS2X…
Ok, Ok so Tony Hawk 3 might already be out for the Xbox in the US, so why am I reviewing Tony Hawk 2X, itās a good question especially as the games not even going to be coming out in the UK! I donāt know, ask somebody else, but here goes.
If you donāt know about the Tony Hawk games then you must have been living in a cave for the last four years, offering seamless and intuitive gameplay, the game quite literally extended way beyond the attraction of just skaters and entertained gamers as one of the best franchises in videogames history.
Tony Hawk 2X arrived at the Xbox launch, and was based on Tony Hawk 2 that was previously released on the PSOne amongst other formats. Of course the game has had a makeover to satisfy the ever-demanding Xbox audience, individual blades of grass replace simple textures thanks to the powerful vertex shaders of the Xbox, five new and exclusive courses are here, along with the complete version of the original Tony Hawk. Whilst itās a great compilation for any TH fan, it is just that a compilation, and hard to justify when the superior THPS3 is already out.
The Tony Hawk series didnāt get its reputation on merit alone, at itās heart led seamless, swift and intuitive gameplay that was so compelling and addictive that you just couldnāt put it down. Of course, at first the sheer scope seemed daunting, but give it time and those impossible moves soon became⦠possible. To say the TH titles feature the best learning curve ever would be an understatement, the truth is, it makes it frighteningly addictive.
THPS2 introduced the revolutionary manual trick to the repertoire, this manoeuvre was used in between tricks to carry on the combo, opening up the scope for some very, very impressive scores. It also extended the skill needed for TH, ok so each game needs skill, youāll have no luck trying to button-bash your way through a TH title, however thereās less reliance on just finding the correct path - as was the technique in THPS - and opens up the possibility for you to create your own paths..
Visually the game has had a complete make-over, weāve talked about the vertex shaders, however the textures are equally as impressive, having been redone and looking crisper then ever. The skaters have all had a polygon increase, resulting in more complicated and detailed models. Whilst the lighting effects make everything seem much more realistic. Obviously itās harder to improve the environments without significantly changing the game, leaving quite empty ghost-town levels especially in comparison to the heavily populated stages found in THPS3.
