Lara is back in a new adventure that is set to be darker and more mature then anything else that has come before it, what really happened to Lara in Egypt???
The lid has finally been blown open on Lara Croftâs next adventure. Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness is set to be a darker and more mature adventure then previous offerings.
Knowing that Lara and the Tomb Raider franchise has fallen from their once mighty perch, Core have taken the opportunity to recreate Lara from her near-death experience in Tomb Raider: the Last Revelation. Lara has become darker, harder and less tolerant (I guess being left for dead does that to you), and has left her Tomb Raiding days behind her. She refuses to confirm or deny rumours about time spent
among obscure North African tribes, but whatever happened after Egypt has caused her to become almost a recluse since her return, refusing to contact anyone from her past. The dark memories that haunt her remain locked inside. And no one risks getting close enough to ask.
Receiving a desperate phone call from her former mentor Von Croy, who reveals that he has been enlisted by a sinister man named Eckhardt to track down one of five 14th century artworks â“ the Obscura Paintings. Lara sets off to Paris to find a city gripped by fear and to find Von Croy has been the victim of a horrific murder and sheâs been framed from the crime, Lara has no option but to go on the run. In her struggle to unravel the trail left by Von Croy, Lara becomes involved in underworld deals, grotesque murders, the dark side of an advanced form of alchemy and a history of blood, betrayal and vengeance spanning across hundreds of years.
The first major change is that the game is split into three main stages, and with this three distinct gameplay styles. The first stage features Lara trying to clear her name, and will almost play like an RPG. The pace is slower then previous Tomb Raider games, and will feature a great amount of character interaction, level branches and being able to upgrade Laraâs attributes. The second stage plays more like previous Tomb Raider game, and introduces the playable Kurtis Trent, a hardened adventurer who shoots first and asks questions later, much like her former self, who is in pursuit of Eckhardt. Could Kurtis become a love interest and manage to find out Laraâs dark secret? Details about the third stage and the gameplay style are still being kept a secret, well until E3 when we get the chance to play it for ourselves.
Although specific details are still being kept a closely guarded secret, itâs believed that the new game will have a lot more depth then the gung-ho nature of the previous titles. Lara will now have to rely on her ingenuity, athleticism and the new edge that has arisen from her âdark inner demonsâ rather then just a pair of 9mm handguns. Lara now has a greater scope for interacting with other characters, whilst the game will be a lot less linear then before allowing the player to craft their way through the adventure. The screens have shown a Metal Gear Solid styled stealth element, with an ability to sneak up behind guards to snap their necks. OK it may not be original, but at least it will add more then the shoot everything dynamics of the previous games.
Refreshingly the graphics engine has been built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS2 and the latest PC graphics cards. Lara is now made up of over 5000 polygons as opposed to the previous 500! The environments that sheâll come across are intricately detailed, creating a captivating game world that should prove to make a more compelling adventure then the last few tired updates.
