No she's not back FROM the dead, it's set in the past.
Ok, so she died at the end of TombRaider 4, but she's back again in this fifth outing on the PlayStation. Don't ask me how, as specifics are a little hard to come by, but expect flashbacks and appearences from old friends such as Jean-Paul and Pierre. Through the course of the game you will find out what happened to dear old Lara.
Hmm... platform jumping, puzzle solving and killing various endangered species as well as the odd human will all be present it's fair to say, as well as perhaps the odd raiding of a tomb or two. Given the somewhat less than steller reception of TombRaider 4 one will be hoping that Core inject some life into the franchise that started off with one of the most innovative and original games for a long time, but that has sadly degenerated into a game-a-year production line. Hopefully the use of flashbacks and non-player characters will liven up the proceedings, and perhaps they could even throw in the odd surprise.
It's on the PlayStation, so don't go expecting anything too spectacular, although given Core's familiarity with the machine the game should be pushing the old grey (or cream if you're using a PSone) box to the limits. Expect some new locations such as Rome, Ireland, Russia and an Industrial complex. Expect Ms. Croft to appear more curvatious than ever, and sporting some of this season's most impressive outfits - fit for a tomb.
A veritable cacophony of sounds will accompany Lara as she makes her way through various tombs, as well as some voice samples of the lady herself, hopefully less cheesy than the infamous "I need to get out of these wet clothes" as showcased in the first game. The musical score should be pretty cinematic, although for the most part you will probably just be left with the echoing sound of your own footsteps, and those of your enemies.
Another TombRaider game, I'm not expecting anything revolutionary, but I am hoping that this is more than a desperate attempt to squeeze the last possible ammount of cash from this high profile PlayStation franchise. With the focus on the plot this could be quite an engaging adventure, but how deep is Ms. Croft, and do we really care about her past, or more importantly her death. One final thought about that death of hers, if you were Core or Eidos, would you really want to kill off your most high profile character?
