ToeJam & Earl III: All Funked Up Preview

We thought they were gone for good, however the funkiest aliens in town are due for a comeback. Take a look as we look at everything known so far.
If I had to choose one classic to be revived it would be this. When the funky alien duo first made their mark on the MegaDrive, the mix of original and fun gameplay, humour, funky sounds and wacky visuals completely hooked me. Subsequently the more routine platform based sequel still kept me hooked, and yet the light went out, it seemed TJ&E had disappeared for good, finally fed up with us mere earthlings. Thankfully last years E3 revealed that wasnât the case, and the duo were set to return on the Dreamcast, whilst thatâs not happening anymore, TJ&E will still making their long-awaited comeback however itâs on the Xbox this time, as Toejam & Earl III: All Funked Up arrives exclusively on that platform later in the year.
The games story tells how the duo along with Latisha - Toejamâs fancy â“ are summoned by Lamont the Great Funkapotamous, whoâs precious collection of sacred vinylâs have been stolen by earthlings and scattered across the universe. So the trio set out in search of the 12 missing vinylâs, located anywhere in the five worlds that span the game â“ country, desert, snow, urban and mossy water.
Fans of the original are in for a treat, as the game plays very similar to the first title, in the fact that emphasis is placed on exploring the levels to find the missing vinylâs and a whole host of other goodies. Of course thereâs a number of pesky humans out to stop you, ranging from the familiar bogeyman and cupid to newcomers such as a gospel choir.
To help the trio out thereâs a number of special items to collect, from favourites such as the Icarus Wings to Rockets. Theyâll also be able to make use of Funk-Fu, an ancient technique to convert the earthlings into the way of the Funk.
As with the first game, the levels are split into blocks and youâll need to grab specials such as the Icarus Wings to progress to the next stage, each of which are randomly generated like the first game to increase the replayability of the game. Who knows there could even be a secret Level 0!!!
Visually the game has undergone a marvellous transformation to the next-generation, taking advantage of pretty much every special trick under the Xboxâ hood. Bump mapping and the use of pixel shaders are all here, to ensure TJ&E3 meets the Xbox high standards of visual excellence. The trio benefit from an extremely high polygon count, so t-shirts crease and jewellery moves as it should, whilst the animation on each of them is an absolute treat. The game also has a day/night cycle, shown through the use of some fantastic lighting effects and real-time shadows. It also plays an integral part to the game, as certain earthlings come out at different times, watch out for the dreaded bogeyman âBOOOGIE-BOOGIE-Boogie-bogieâ at night. To round things off the game runs at a solid 60 FPS at all times.
Both of the previous TJ&E games prided themselves on their excellent soundtrack and sound effects, the dentistâs mad laugh, the âhallelujahâ when you got healed, I could go on and on, suffice to say sound will play an important part in this game as well. Over 40 songs are featured in the game, complete with two music videos starring the rapping trio.
As with the first title the game can be played with two players, whereby a single screen is displayed and splits into two whenever you split off from each other. Whilst the game will be very similar to the first title, thereâs a whole load of extras that have been added including mini-games and side-quests similar to those featured in the second title, ToeJam & Earl 2: Panic on Funkatron.
