Startup developers, Weka Interactive recently announced their first project. We take an early look at what may be a game to look out for.
The Y-Project is a recently announced FPS for the PC and Xbox, coming from new developers, Westka Interactive, that promises to be a little different from the norm.
The Y-Project takes place on a distant planet, 200 years in the future. For the past 70 years, man has been constructing a new home far away from Earth. Yet a savage insect alien threat has forced the population into a giant city protected by a vast dome. As the game begins, a swarm of mutated insects has breached the dome. Mankind must embark on a tense fight for survival.
Powered by the Unreal engine, which is being continually updated throughout development to include such effects as particle based steam and GeForce 3 powered lighting the game truly impresses. Great lengths have gone to ensure quality is apparent in every aspect, right down to employing a trained architect to ensure the cityscape creates an in-game world which is futuristic yet believable. As with the upcoming console versions of Black & White, Westka Interactive have enlisted MathEngineâs Karma physics model to ensure bodies, creatures and objects react as one would expect in reality.
The player takes the role of an involuntary hero, one of the last surviving humans. His role is to rid the world of the insect threat, through any means possible. Throughout the game, two factions â“ one Military, the other Scientific â“ vie to enlist the player into their ranks by offering weapons upgrades, additional items and extra power. It is the playerâs choice as to whether to switch allegiances and take the bounty or continue being loyal to one, losing the reward forever.
And this is where the games innovative approach begins to sound more meaningful, depending on which faction you choose; your approach to each mission will vary between brains or brawn. For example, one level sees the player pass by a number of CCTV screens and notice a women trapped by a group of insects. The Military approach would involve simply storming the room with guns blaring. However the scientific approach would see you given a fire extinguisher by the Scientific faction, allowing you to enter an air vent and gain a position where taking out the insects is a mere formality.
Each choice is up to you to make at the beginning of each mission, choose one and youâll miss out on important items that the other approach would have given you. Multiple solutions are always available, giving players unparalleled freedom to play the game in a manner that suits their style â“ either gun-ho or with more emphasis on quest solving.
As with Half Life the plot is intertwined and played out through the gameplay segments. Set pieces will detail the ongoing story and bring the game to life in a way that both Half Life and Deus Ex both did superbly.
