The Warriors - Gangs of New York Part 1 Feature

TVG takes a look at some of the gangs set to feature in Rockstar's forthcoming adaptation...
In The Warriors, you take control of one of the toughest street gangs in New York City. But what makes a gang great if not for great enemies? Building on the characters in the classic 1979 film, Rockstar Games has raised the stakes on this reinvention of the classic brawler by creating some of the most memorable, and lethal, opponents in recent videogame memory. If the Warriors truly want to become one of the most feared gangs in New York City, they have some stiff competition, as weâll see below.
Rockstar has expanded upon the storyline of the film in order to deliver a deep narrative and gameplay experience. In doing so, theyâve taken a few creative liberties, one of which was to create a rival gang that The Warriors would face early in the game. And thus, The Destroyers were born. Repping the East Side of Coney, The Destroyers are the first gang you encounter in the game, and are the only gang the team in Toronto created for the game, with all the other gangs you encounter in The Warriors being directly from the film.
The Destroyers
The Destroyers are the original Coney Island gang and led by a backstabbing drunk, Virgil. The Destroyers are a heavy set and they put up some stiff competition in Coney Island turf wars. They are easily recognizable in their jean jackets emblazoned with the Destroyers logo on back. The jackets might remind some of the Warriors classic colorsâ”and with good reason, as key members of the Warriors used to be members of the Destroyers. Old grudges and neighbouring turfs make the Destroyers a rival to the Warriors in Coney. If Cleon and the rest of the Warriors have any chance of taking their gang All-City, they will have to deal with the Destroyers first.
The Jones Street Boys
A cocky bunch of trust fund kids who live in a world where money isnât an object and petty crime is just a thrill ride. Still a set that can hang with the rest, the Jones Street Boys have Bensonhurst locked up tight. Without any true allegiances, the Jones Street Boys will often switch loyalties at the drop of a hat. Their only real enemy seems to be the Saracens.
A spoiled group of thrill seekers, the Jones Street Boys will rampage through their set, causing vandalism, committing petty crimes, and laying a beatdown on anyoneâ”gang member or pedestrian alikeâ”who has the misfortune of crossing their path.
The Lizzies
The Lizzies are an all-girl gang who can roll with the toughest gangs in New York City. Using their god-given gifts to their advantage, The Lizzies can cause even the toughest set to lower their defence, but the Lizzies arenât just known for their looks--they have a tendency to pack some serious heat, which makes them a dangerous gang not to be trifled with.
The Punks
The toughest gang to ever wear roller skates, the Punks are a serious bunch of brawlers. Mean mothers looking for a good time and a good fight, this clique wonât back down from anything. They can usually be found hanging around the Union Square subway stationâ”theyâre the ones on the subway platform wearing overalls, but they arenât waiting for a trainâ”theyâre out for anyone foolish enough to get caught on their turf.
Thanks to Rockstar for their insight into the mean streets of 1979 New York. We'll have more on The Warriors (including the new part of our look at the gangs of NYC) shortly...
