The Simpsons Wrestling Review

I’m not sure why this game was ever made.
Over the years you have seen great wrestling games such as the highly successful âSmackdownâ series on the Playstation, âWWF Royal Rumbleâ and âWWF Attitudeâ on the Dreamcast and âWWF No mercyâ on the N64.
So whoâs idea was it to bring out another wrestling game on the Playstation, except this time featuring, instead of proper wrestlers, the well known American family âThe Simpsonsâ and all their neighbors, friends and foes from hometown Springfield?
Well actually it was âEA gamesâ, âFox interactiveâ and âBig Ape productions Incâ idea to create a wrestling game based on âThe Simpsons.â
This is not you average wrestling game though, for one thing the producers put in a wacky plot to give the game that little bit extra. The occupants of Springfield are challenged to wrestling by none other than an Alien force. The Simpsons and co have to find somebody who can take on these aliens otherwise Springfield will be in deep trouble!
The game has three single player modes which you have to complete in order, so that you can play the next, the modes are, âNew Challenger Circuitâ; âDefender circuitâ; and Champion circuit.â Then of course you have the âVS match gameâ so you can beat the you know what out of the person next to you.
For moves, there are not a lot. You have special moves that you can use just by pressing two buttons when they are shown on the screen, for example Homer will throw a bowling bowl at his opponent. Then you have high, low and medium attacks, then there are three different types of grapples, itâs easier to simply keep jumping on your opponentsâ head.
There are a number of power ups, which appear at certain times in the ring, like a pair of running shoes will make you move faster, or power ups that will restore your health. As well as this, there are also letters, which you can collect to spell âTAUNTâ, that is exactly what you do, you taunt your opponent and for approximately 15-20 seconds you will be invulnerable to any attack.
Basically the graphics are not great, in fact theyâre pretty poor. The Springfield residents watch in the background, but they are motionless. One character may move ever so slightly every few seconds, he/she moves into three positions, moving his head and arms, this character will introduce the wrestlers.
The music is rubbish, but to make up for this there are sound effects, each character coming out with about five different sayings, but once youâve heard Homer saying, âWhy you littleâ for the 200th time, sadly it does get a bit boring if not annoying. Anything else, there is always commentary. Not many wrestling games have commentary. Simpsons Wrestling does.
You canât really call it commentary though. Every now and again the character who introduced you into the ring may say something, for example Reverend Lovejoy might say, âOh boy, that is gonna hurt in the morning,â and thatâs it.
Iâm not sure why this game was ever made. If you have enough patience you may attempt to complete it that one time, but never play it again, or you might play it a few times with your mate, and soon get bored.
The graphics, the sound effects and the limited amount of moves all make this game that little bit non-exciting, if you will, boring. I can assure you, I wonât be rushing down the shops for this, or even going down the shops at all for that matter.
