Homer + Car = Disaster.
Crazy Taxi is one of the greatest games on the Dreamcast, so it was clear that sooner or later someone would take the winning formula and make a clone of the games mechanics. With the in mind the idea of putting The Simpsons into the game adding a strong line-up of well known characters seamed like a good idea.
The old fool Mr. Burns is up to his greedy tricks again, this time purchasing the Springfield Transit Corporation and jacking up the fares. Refusing to shell out the high rates, Springfield citizens are forced into humours āroad rageā as they brave angry commuters, jam-packed back-routes and the challenge to make enough money to buy back the Transit Corporation before time runs out. Starting of with only four characters out of a total of 25 you must drive round locations featured in the TV series picking up characters and dropping them off at their destinations. As you progress through the game you can unlock new characters and areas.
Each character has their own Vehicle ranging from Willies Tractor to Homerās Plough. Each vehicle has its own attributes making them distinctively different from the others, however donāt get too excited because by the time youāve unlock the tenth character your probably already bored of the game. Simpsons Road Rage offers a few new additions to the style of game, which make up for the slightly tedious and uninspiring single player mode. For example throughout the game certain passengers will ask you to do tasks before taking them to their destination like Avoiding traffic, if you complete the task you are rewarded with more cash. There is also a two-payer split screen more that lets you beat opponents in a race for the next-passenger, or if youāre really sneaky steal their passengers mid-ride.
There are three main modes to the game, Story Mode that allows for 40 to 60 unique passenger deliveries, plus seven bonus deliveries. This option allows you to progress though the game and unlock new characters and levels. The second mode is called Sunday Driving, which lets the player pick up passengers and explore the city at a leisurely pace. Lastly the two player split screen mode lets two people battle it out on the city, trying to pick up as many people as possible whilst beating up the opponent.
The developers have decided once again to jump onto the Cell-Shaded bandwagon that seams to be a big hit at the moment. Surprisingly though this works well, the technique is called the Toon Render, which gives the game the authentic Simpsons animated look. The graphics are actually very nice with bright colours and manic environments filled with pedestrians and other crazy car drivers. As you would expect the game is full of funny sound clips, featuring voices from the TV series. Some of them will make you chuckle especially when Homer picks up Ned Flanders. Certain characters will also interact with each other helping to recreate the Simpsons world.
