The Outfit Q&A Feature
Derek dela Fuente

TVG gets the lowdown on Relic Entertainment's return with an explosive WW2 offering for the Xbox 360...
The Outfit is one of the first of many 360 titles coming from THQ and their internal studio, Relic Entertainment. Billed as a WWII Action game it comes complete with extensive multiplayer modes and the freedom of total destruction. Players will be able to choose between three playable squad leaders each possessing specific skills and abilities (i.e. Close-combat specialist, Heavy-arms specialist or Anti-tank specialist.)
Utilising the power of the 360 this title is already highly anticipated. Derek dela Fuente spoke with Jeff Brown, Design Director, about both the game and the impressive 360.
Creating a title for a next-generation console must be a daunting prospect; what are some of the core focuses that the team are concentrating on with The Outfit?
Two of the biggest focuses of the 360 are High Definition sound / image and connectivity. With that in mind, it was critical to us that we really take advantage with a strong Live! presence. With a co-op single player campaign, as well as 8 player competitive modes over Live!, The Outfit offers a lot for the gamer that wants to go online. With stunning visuals and 5.1 audio The Outfit looks and sounds like nothing you have ever seen before
Is the makeup of the game more action based than realistic and can you inform the readers about the 3 squad leaders players can select from?
The game is very much more action based than realistic. With explosive Destruction on Demandā¢, the player has the freedom to shape the action the way they want it.
Deuce Williams is the leader of The Outfit, and is equipped with a bazooka for taking down even the heaviest vehicles, as well as a pistol and frag grenades for taking down infantry up close and personal. Players that enjoy a versatile, heavily armed hero should pick Deuce.
JD Tyler is a veteran scout, and carries a long range rifle for picking off targets at range, as well as a shotgun for devastating effect against multiple foes up close. Patient players that like to dance around at long range and kill without being seen should play Tyler.
Tommy Mac is a hard charging bulldog with a Thompson SMG and a flamethrower. Players that like charging right into the action would be well suited to Tommy
Each hero also has different stats in a half dozen categories, and comes with different squad types.
Please can you tell us about some of the game modes on offer particularly the co-operative mode!?
The Outfit really takes advantage of Live! With the ability to play co-op online with a friend, or take on up to 7 other players in one of several team based game styles. For people that donāt play online, rest assured there is plenty of single player content as well, with a robust 12 mission campaign that will keep you coming back for more.
Can you tell us a little about Field Units and their significance to the gameās biggest feature, Destruction on Demand?
Field Units (or FUās) are earned through combat. Killing enemies, blowing stuff up, even dying earns FUās. These FUās then enable Destruction on Demand ā“ players can call in vehicles, emplacements, reinforcements, air strikes, and more: whenever and wherever they want.
"You have the freedom to set up emplacements wherever you want and bring in vehicles to up the destruction level when you want, not when the designers says its ok."
What kind of in-game details have the team striven for and will it offer lots of deformation and destruction of the landscapes?
The Outfit features the Freedom of Total Destruction. Every wall, building, vehicle, emplacement, bush, tree ā“ you get the idea ā“ is fully destroyable.
Please tell us about two of the most diverse ā“ tasks/actions within the game to show the diversity of what is in store for gamers?
Imagine you come around the corner and see a Nazi MG nest staring you in the face. You can dodge from cover to cover and close to take it out with grenades. You can also order your squad to throw tear gas at the emplacement and charge in while the Naziās cough and choke. Or, you can retreat, call in a tank, and roll right over the emplacement. Each encounter in The Outfit has as many solutions as the player can think up ā“ The Outfit is all about player choice.
Can you expand a little on how interaction and commands between the leader and squad members work?
In keeping with the straight ahead action of The Outfit, your squad is fast and easy to use. If you shoot at something, they will shoot as well, and they are smart enough to follow you, use cover, and get out of the way of bullets both friendly and enemy. For those times when you need them to do a little more, you can use the d-pad to order them to assault, suppress, and more.
What do you see as the most interesting/innovative aspect of the game?
Destruction on Demand allows players to drive the action in a way that they have never seen before. You have the freedom to set up emplacements wherever you want and bring in vehicles to up the destruction level when you want, not when the designers says its ok.
How technology focused is the team? What kind of physics system is being implemented along with the 3D engine?
With any new console, you have to be very technology focused. We have a large programming team that is doing a great job of getting everything they can out of the 360, both graphically and engine-wise. The Outfit uses several different physics systems ⓠHavok⢠for rag doll and character physics and our own home-grown vehicle physics system among them.
TVG would like to thank Jeff Brown for taking a quick time out to answer our questions. The Outfit is scheduled for a European release in 2006; weāll have further coverage of the title soonā¦
