SCEE London returns with an all-new Getaway targeted specifically for the PSP...
It's muppets and crooks disguised as BT engineers aplenty, as Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today released further details on The Getaway debut on the PSP.
Currently in development at SCEE London, The Getaway: Gangs of London is an all-new title in the gritty series, which promises to take the setting and criminal theme of the series and offer it in a whole new handheld gang based experience.
Taking control of one of five different gangs (Cockney, Triad, Yardie, Russian or Pakistani), players have to use a mixture of action and strategy to overcome rival gangs and take control of London's underworld.
Gangs of London is divided into different gore gameplay areas, with the Action section providing over 60 different missions each separated with graphic-novel style narratives that guide the player through their attempts to become London's Mr Big. Each mission provides you with a whole gang to control and issue commands, along with the ability to "Hot Swap" to take direct control ala Battlefield 2: Modern Combat.
Fans of turn-based strategy will also have something to shout about as The Getaway series looks set to get a little more cerebral. Using a combination of skill, nerve and chance, players can challenge up to four other gamers on a single PSP in this mode - or just play against the AI, if you'd rather your mates didn't get their grubby mits on your PSP. Essentially a board game mixed with poker, Gang Battle provides an interactive map of London, on which you must commit your gang to invade and defend different sections of turf, with bonus cards providing a wide variety of surprises. Moves within the game are all made invisible until the end of a turn, as such lending a sense of "bluffing" to the game as you attempt to scheme your way to the top.
Already sounding like the best instalment in The Getaway series to date, Gangs of New York also features a number of other options, such as the Free Roaming mode, which allows you to roam around the streets of London according to your own criteria. Players can even take on the role of an American tourist with a fetching shirt and conspicuous camera combo, where you're tasked to travel around London and take photos of the most famous landmarks to unlock awards. Additionally, wannabe cabbies can take advantage of the Knowledge mode, a real-life test that London's finest take to discover every side-street, road and thoroughfare in the Capital.
Finally to capture that five-minute fix, The Getaway: Gangs of London also captures the nation's favourite pastime, in the shape of British Pub Games. Fun games such as darts, pool and skittles can all be accessed from the main menu, providing the perfect
As if that wasn't enough, Gangs of London also includes a unique Game Sharing mode, which generates a Tube level exclusive to each PSP with the content dependant on the serial number of the machine. Once a friend has beamed it over, you'll be faced with varying mission objectives, environments, characters and weaponry, such as escaping from Oxford Circus's pursuing police force armed only with a bat (did somebody even think this through, let's hope Stockwell doesn't come up too often?) or clearing Waterloo's northbound platform of 70+ Triad's with a machinegun.
The Getaway: Gangs of London is scheduled for release later in the year; TVG will have further information soon.
