Take on the London underworld in The Getaway

The Getaway is a rather important project for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe as it currently has over one hundred people working on the game. This represents a significant investment in the game and it is being given equal billing with the biggest budget videogames around. Therefore it is expected that the game will be something rather special, if not, Sony Europe will have a rather large amount of egg on their face.

It would be lovely to tell you how The Getaway plays at this point in time; however, this one is being kept firmly under-wraps. We can tell you what the developers intend to accomplish with the game however. Essentially The Getaway places you in the middle of a Brit Gangster flick, taking on the role of an ex-con dragged reluctantly back into the underworld by the kidnapping of his son. Taking on the role of Mark you have to go up against crime baron Charlie Jolson in order to get your son back. Along the way there will no doubt be plenty of twists and turns, but, well, like most things about this game, theyâre under wraps.

What we do know is that SCEEâs Soho Studio is working overtime to give the game one of the most authentic environments around. Painstakingly recreating central London with masses of real-life textures is no easy task; Metropolis Street Racer managed this with considerable aplomb. Whilst MSR simulated London very well Bizarre Creations only had to worry about the level and cars, in The Getaway there will be criminals, police and civilians all going about their business. With fully working road systems this is going to be somewhat akin to Grand Theft Auto in three dimensions, except rather more realistic.

One of the major headaches for the development team is to keep the game as consistent and immerse as possible. Technical issues have to be overcome, for instance you have the ability to get into any car in the game and drive it, this presents a wealth of gameplay opportunities but along with it, numerous technical headaches. The Getaway is going to have look excellent down to the last detail â“ if the screenshots that have been released are anything to go by â“ yet for the true imersive there will have to be a sense of scale. A demonstration of the attention to detail can be found in the characters themselves. Given that The Getaway is billing itself, as a serious game great care is being extend to the characters and the voice acting. Using Digimask technology Team Soho are actually rendering their actorâs heads in three dimensions. Not only do you hear the actor, you see them. All of the cut scenes are being handled in real time to keep you in the game world and great care is being taken to sure that these are compelling rather than rubbish.

All this talk of cinematic plot lines and luscious graphics and attention to detail are all well and good, but what of the game itself? Well, itâs all a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment. Driving will play a large part, as you can take control of any of the 50 or so vehicles in the game, chases, races and destruction will no doubt feature here. As this is a gangster flick you can expect some shootouts, both indoors and out, with the added problem of not killing innocent civilians. It seems that the game will be action all the way, but there could be adventure elements, possibly in a Shenmue style where you have to gain more information about the location of your son. However all of this is speculation, as we really have no idea what Team Soho are going to throw at us.
