The Bouncer Preview

The Bouncer is shaping up to be one of the most visually astute titles on the PS2, but can the gameplay match the visuals.
Although reviewers often say that it's gameplay over graphics that counts, it has to be said that great graphics will soften up even the most cold hearted of reviewers. If that's the case then The Bouncer will reduce many reviewers to quivering wrecks upon it's release. There are few words that can do justice to how good this game looks, and I will refrain from using them, just look at the screenshots, and the movies to get a good idea of what to expect.
However while we can spend hours analysing the looks of The Bouncer, from the incredible detail, to the cinematic 'Matrix' style effects and the sheer interactivity of the scenery, we cannot really comment on the gameplay. This is because the game was sadly not playable at the Tokyo Game Show earlier this year.
What we do know is that the game is developed by Dream Factory, the people responsible for Ehrgeiz, and it is a fighting game, of sorts... From what we have seen so far the game looks like a four player action movie, with fights
occurring completely in 3D, with the characters having the ability to use parts of the scenery in any way they see fit. This is somewhat similar to Powerstone, but on a much larger scale, and looking far better than Capcom's far from shabby game. The interesting thing about The Bouncer is going to be seeing how it actually works, as a four player game at least, purely because something like this has never really been tried on this scale, and actually getting the
fighting as fluid and movie like as seen on these demonstrations could be tricky. That said Dream Factory know what they're doing, and The Bouncer is very, very promising and it could quite easily be one of the stand out games come the launch of the PlayStation2 in the West.
Only time will tell as to whether the gorgeous looks of The Bouncer can be matched with solid gameplay, but knowing the reputations of both Square and Dream Factory, that looks assured.
