Set two years before the events of the first film, can this game succeed where so many have failed.

A loud groan went up around the office last year, funnily enough around the same time that Infogrames announced a new Terminator game was in the works. However it looks like our prayers might have been answered, as not only is this NOT based on the appalling new movie, itās also looking quite promising.

The Terminator is being developed by Paradigm Entertainment, they of Pilotwings 64, Beetle Racing, SpyHunter and Duck Dodgers fame. The game is an original story set in 2027, two years prior to the events of the first film. Players must fight through an apocalyptic world, battling with Terminators and Skynet Hunter/Killers, to reach the end and safely send Kyle Reese back in time so that the events of Terminator 1 can unfold.

The game is set out in a third-person action/adventure manner, however before you run away the developers are promising to capture the same elements that made the films so great, the pacing, the tension, the relentlessness of the machines as well as some of the characters, and from what weāve seen they might be right.

Twelve levels will feature within the game, in which the player will take control of three different characters, firstly Kyle Reese the hero of the first Terminator movie, a hardened soldier and unknowing father to John Connor; Catherine Luna, a special operations officer; and a third, highly secretive character. Each character is equipped with distinct strengths, combat style and signature weapons that come into play during the game. Of course youāre not going to get very far without a decent selection of arms, the developers are promising over 20 types of weapons will feature in the final game, including rocket launchers, shock batons and explosive devices.

During your fight against Skynet other members will join your cause, thanks to some clever AI youāll get the feeling that youāre really taking place in the battle hinted at in the films. The game also introduces a new camera system that allows the players to target enemies clearly and instinctively; weāve yet to see this in action so canāt comment on its revolutionary impact!

Being set in 2027 means that youāll be facing up to numerous T800ās but what of the mercury shape-shifting T-1000ās? The developers hinted that whilst these models were nowhere near to complete, the technology did exist in some form!!!
