Syphon Filter Review

Syphon Filter prooves to be a worthy adversary to Metal Gear Solid.

I'll bet that when each and every one of you gamers heard that Syphon Filter was coming the first thing that popped into your head was 'Metal Gear Solid', and to a certain degree, that's entirely understandable. Syphon Filter has you controlling a Special Agent sent in to stop terrorists from wreaking havoc, so does Metal Gear Solid, both games have giant missiles that threaten the entire world, both have sniper modes, genetically engineered viruses, the list goes on and on. What really lets this game step out of Metal Gear's very respectable shadow is it's variety in gameplay. While one mission will have you raiding through the streets killing almost everyone you encounter, another will have you shadowing someone through a museum exhibit while picking off un-weary bad guys with your silenced pistol. Yes, one can argue that it is fairly unpolished in some important areas, (Namely graphics, Sound, Control) it is the gameplay that will really earn itself a place in your videogame library; it's not Metal gear Solid, but if you loved Konami's classic (and who didn't?) then Syphon Filter will definitly not disappoint.

The AI in this game is another area that Syphon Filter excells in. This game puts the 'I' back into 'AI'. Enemies retreat, hide, roll out of sight, duck behind crates, surrender, and even call for back up. Your Team Mates all act smartly as well. Knowing when to hide, back you up, run, and even try to create a diversion for you-it really draws you into the story, which can get corny at times.

The controls in this game are nothing for you to write home about, although they get the job done. The graphics in Syphon Filter are a mixed bag, many grainy textures really turn you off and detract from the gameplay. Although there are many areas where you have as much as 5 enemies on screen without a hitch of slowdown. One more short fall about this game that has to be heard is the huge lack of quality in the FMV's. They are, simply put, terrible graphi wise, sometimes even looking like in game graphics, although they do a good job of leading you through the story.

In my opinion, this is an espionage title that no fan of the genre can be with out. It isn't as good as Metal Gear, but an awesome experience none-the-less.
