See characters the best Nintendo games battle it out on GameCube.
Super Smash Brothers on the N64 was an unorthodox yet compelling fighting game featuring some unusual pugilists. Nintendoâs finest battling it out was a recipe for success, however it was somewhat of a surprise when we found out that this would be one of the first games released for the GameCube. On reflection it seems like a great game to showcase Nintendoâs large roster of characters, even if theyâre not currently starring in any new release.
The first thing to notice about Super Smash Brothers Melee is the graphics, for a four player fighting game they look stunning. Despite the characters appearing rather small on screen they are amazingly detailed looking practically as good as pre-rendered graphics of a previous age. Of course they animate just as well, running at the now practically pre-requisite 60 frames a second, exuding character from every pixel. The stages too look amazing and are authentic to the games they are based around, for instance the patchwork style of Yoshiâs stage looks simply amazing. Stages also affect the gameplay, such as on Captain Falconâs stage, set on an F-Zero race course, where periodically a whole load of craft from the game come flying past you and if youâre not careful youâll get hit.
Developers HAL have not been simply just upgrading the graphics; the whole game has had an overhaul, with practically every aspect being improved. The one player mode is now more than a simple fight against the computer; each level is now structured much more like a platform game. You need to make your way through the level jumping and killing enemies until you make your way the character whose stage it is. This adds a lot more to the one-player as the main fighting aspect is much more enjoyable with some friends.
Despite the multi-player mode on the N64 game being extremely compelling HAL are again not resting on their laurels, adding in some new features. There three main modes; Melee, Tournament and Custom. The first is your standard four-player madness, yet also has a number of options within it such as Stock, Time Melee, Team Melee and Coin and Decision modes. Coin mode is about smacking coins out of your opponents and being the richest character at the end of the fight. Decision mode forces you to fight tactically as this is for points that get dished out for pulling off good combos and using a variety of techniques. The Tournament mode allows you to create your own tournaments, with more than four players, although the total number has not been revealed yet. Lastly there is the Custom option, which allows you to mess around with the settings such as damage ratios, stage selection, and even items.
