Super Smash Bros Melee Review

Your favourite Nintendo characters return once again for a good old scrap...
Iāll admit firstly that I wasnāt a big fan of the original Super Smash Bros on the N64, limited moves and a general lack of refinement coupled with the completely manic action didnāt appeal to me, compared to the likes of my favourite fighters such as Streetfighter 2 and more ārefinedā fighters. However it seemed that I was in the minority, the original went down a storm, and the GameCube sequel was garnishing high praise across the world, complete with very impressive sales in both Japan and the US. So I decided to sit down with the European copy, and try to understand what Super Smash Bros Melee is all about.
At first my fears were confounded in the apparent lack of skill needed, you feel as if thereās nothing to do except walking up to your foe and hammering the buttons as fast as possible. However after extended play youāll soon begin to realise the subtitles, this is a fighter like no other, vastly different to the Tekken/Streetfighter school of fighting, itās all about fun, pure and simple.
At first the lack of an energy bar will put fighting fans off, instead a percentage meter is displayed that increases as you deliver killing blows. You win the fight by knocking up the amount of times you knock your opponent out of the arena, the higher the percentage, the further they fly out of the arena when you deliver that killing blow ā“ each character has a double-jump manoeuvre that allows them to try and get back into the arena, so fights become humorous affairs as you find Kirby trying his best to float his big arse back onto the stage!
Fighting fans will also deride that lack of individual moves between characters, however youāll soon realise that keeping the moves limited makes the game more accessible then any other fighter ā“ a fighting game for the masses. It also highlights the games main feature, the huge amount of weapons littered across the stages that you can pick up and use, look out for Pokeballs, Marioās hammer from the original Donkey Kong game (complete with the original sound sample) and pills from Dr.Mario amongst many others. The game isnāt about stringing combos together or mastering the precise timing needed to reverse an opponents attack, instead its all about using the stage and weapons to your advantage.
Super Smash Bros single player mode was sadly lacking, fortunately HAL have completely reworked this mode for the sequel, resulting in a mode that will entertain you on lonely nights. The standard Classic Mode is in there, which sees you fight against a number of opponents and then face off against a boss. This has now be joined by the Adventure Mode, where you walk from side-to-side through the characters home stages, itās nice to see so much attention paid to the level of detail and serves a sense of nostalgia working through the stages inspired by previous Nintendo classics. Perhaps the best mode is the Event Mode, which sees you completing various objectives, ranging from collecting coins from your foes to beating as many characters as possible in a certain time limit. To finish off the single modes are a variety of bonus games, and the ability to collect the various goodies to use in the multiplayer mode.
Which is where the game really shines, like so many other Nintendo games, Super Smash Bros Melee takes on another level when you hook up four pads for some multiplayer fun. Battles will often become manic affairs as youāre not entirely sure whatās happening, but thereās no denying the satisfaction to be had as you knock your friend of the stage watching his desperate attempts to get back on as the last few seconds run off the clock, sheer genius. You can create your own rules for the multiplayer battles, ranging from last man standing to the most amount of knockouts.
Visually Super Smash Bros Melee is on a different planet, this si the best youāve seen Nintendoās characters looking. High quality textures really set this game out from the rest, youāll see the denim design in Marioās dungarees, the fur on Fox McCloud and Donkey Kong. Combine the delicious look with stunningly fluid 60FPS animation, and some sublime lighting and particle effects and youāve got one of the best looking fighters currently out. Needless to say youāll want to open up all of the characters, to see what their next-generation make-over looks like, let me tell you thereās more then a few surprises in store. The levels themselves also look wonderful which is important as they have more importance then being a simple backdrop as in other fighters, exuberating in style and panache, youāll spend half the time checking out all of the little details found in each one.
