Star Wars: The Clone Wars is set amidst one of the greatest conflicts in the Star Wars universe...

âBegun, the Clone War hasâ were the immortal words issued by Yoda towards the end of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Despite only a few references in the original trilogy, the Clone Wars has always been an area of fascination for Star Wars fans and (hopefully) one that Episode III and more specifically LucasArts latest PS2 and GameCube title, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, will shed some more light upon.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars was announced just before E3, currently in development at Battlezone creators, Pandemic Studios, for the Gamecube and Playstation2. The title is a ground and air based combat shooter inspired by and expanding upon one of the Star Wars galaxyâs most dramatic and intensely fought conflicts. Players take on the role of Annakin Skywalker, Mace-Windu or Obi-Wan Kenobi as they lead a clone army from the Republic against the menacing offensive threat of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

âLucasArts has been keen to work with Pandemic ever since the first version of Battlezone, which perfectly combined action and strategy with a tremendous graphics engine,â says Simon Jeffery, president of LucasArts. âThe high level of quality and sophistication theyâve brought to previous projects, combined with the Clone War, one of the most epic events in Star Wars, will undoubtedly result in an exhilarating game that will meet, if not exceed, the expectations of players and fans alike.â

âThe Clone War was first mentioned in the film Star Wars: A New Hope, and though few details were revealed the conflict has continued to intrigue fans over the years,â says Josh Resnick, president of Pandemic Studios. âOn the eve of the premiere of Star Wars: Episode II, we now know that the Clone War was one of the largest and most pivotal events in the history of Star Wars. Pandemicâs vast experience in developing large-scale military combat action games is ideally suited to recreating that legendary war for an interactive medium, and will enable players to experience all its intensity first-hand.â

Taking place directly after Episode II, itâs up to you to thwart the evil Count Dookuâs plans of reassembling an ancient Sith weapon of mass destruction. Players will battle through 16 missions based on six immense Star Wars worlds, from the desolate, ice-covered ruins of Rhen Var and war-torn plains of Geonosis, to the towering treetop cities of the Wookiee home planet of Kashyyyk.

LucasArts have unofficially dubbed this the sequel to Rogue Leader; a quick play revealed that itâs easy to see why. Controls take on the same arcade feel, whilst the strategy levels have been upped giving you greater control of your wingmen for example. The game has a wide number of craft for you to pilot, including speeder bikes, AT-SX assault walkers, fighter tanks, and Republic gunships. In total there will be over 30 different vehicles for you to take control of and engage in the mighty conflict.

Interestingly not all of the combat will take place in a vehicle, some missions will see you on foot battling against countless Confederation Droids with nothing more then your trusty lightsabre. Hopefully these missions will show-off the true scope and dimension of the legendary battle; weâve been promised that some levels will feature hundreds of Clone Troopers and Battle Droids fighting on the battlefield at the same time!

Leading on the GameCube, Star Wars: The Clone Wars is already looking very impressive as it chucks around a number of highly detailed craft through some very expansive environments. Lighting and particle effects help to enhance that Star Wars feel, especially in the missions that see you replacing a speeder-bike for a lightsabre. At E3 the game was prone to some occasional slowdowns, however weâve been assured that the game will have a constant 60FPS frame-rate upon its release. All in all Pandemic Studios look to have done a wonderful job of recreating those impressive scenes from Episode II.

To top things off the game will feature a number of multiplayer modes, for split-screen two-player action on the Playstation2 and four-player on the GameCube. These range from the standard deathmatch styled Duel mode and the King of the Hill to the rather more interesting Conquest Mode, which sees each player given a base and the objective to destroy each others. In between the bases are a number of outposts which when captured will automatically produce defensive turrets and offensive AI units for the team.
