We take a look at the latest Episode II game to hit the market.
Okay calm yourself down, we know that Star Wars Episode II is shortly upon us and once again we will be cast into a world of good and evil. With the imminent release of the second film a dozen games based on the film will be on the way. One of the first to hit the shops is Star Wars Racer Revenge, where we return to the pit crew with Anakin Skywalker for another fast paced, adrenaline rushing, Pod Racing championship.
Racer Revenge is the sequel to the hit racing title Pod Racer, where you take control of a character from the Star Wars Universe and race around extreme locations in a very fast pod. If you havenāt seen Episode I yet let me explain. Pod Racing is all about driving futuristic Pods that can reach speeds of up to 600 mph around a course for three laps, the person to finish first is the winner. However itās rather nasty sport with opponents trying to take each other out to gain extra rewards, obstacles such as walls and other objects will get in your way causing much damage to your pods.
The gameplay is very simplistic select your character (more then sixteen in to total including Anakin himself and is arch enemy Sebulba), and start the championship. As you progress through the championship you will be rewarded with points, these can then be used to improve your pod by purchasing new items at Wattoās shop. It is essential to improve your pod as the later levels require more speed for you to finish in the top positions. Whilst the game offers āmore of the sameā from the first game the developers Rainbow Studios have improve the AI making it much more frantic, Tom Byron Director of Marketing at LucasArts stated, āThis sequel\'s stronger AI will deliver an even greater punch of speed and intensity for PlayStation 2 players, resulting in all-out, do-or-die battles to the finish of every race.\" There is a total of 18 circuits to compete in across Tatooine and five new worlds. Each unique course features a variety of routes and shortcuts that clever Pod racers will learn to navigate at break-neck speeds in order to win.
The original title became quite successful however it wasnāt exactly the next Mario Kart. Thankfully after playing Racer Revenge the game feels more in-depth and itās actually very satisfying. The courses are well laid out, varied and offer a number of different routes to complete the lap, add to that speeds of up to 600mph and your in for an exhilarating ride. The easy option is to get into first place and keep going till the end; however that might not always be the most rewarding. As a racer you get rewarded for your place at the end, but also on how many opponents you have āKOā so sometimes you have to stay back and take them down. Saying that the computer controlled pods will also bash you around to try and take you down, so from time to time you will need to make some fixes on your pod to stay in once piece thus slowing you down.
The graphics are not exactly the greatest we have seen on the PlayStation 2, there are far too many jagged edges and the game generally lacks detail. At certain stages in the game the frame rate drops slightly, however this is mainly on the opening sequences and when they game gets very frantic.
