Spider-Man Review

By Stephen Leyton on 01/01/1970 Can the guys who created Tony Hawk apply the magic to good old Spidey???

Marvel seam to have a great way of making classic comic heroes and Spider-Man has to be one of the greatest. Those of you that are old enough might just remember Spider Man's adventure on the Mega Drive, which for its time was a classic. Thanks to the guys that brought us Tony Hawk's Skateboarding, we can now play as Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) on the Dreamcast.

It came to a surprise when we learnt that the game was being developed by Neversoft, what was even more intriguing was the fact that it would use to same game-engine seen in Tony Hawk's. A few questions came to mind, like how they could develop a 3D platform game on an engine based around skateboarding. Thankfully the transition is smooth, silky and slick. It won't take you that long before you really find yourself gripped in the game swinging from roof to roof, and spinning your foes in a web leaving them paralyzed and thus easy prey for that final knock out blow.

There is a total of 30 levels, spread over twelve different levels that in the end form a complete story which has a great comic feel. The story starts with a Spider-Man imposter getting Peter Parker (the real Spider-Main) into trouble. Soon after the law and just about everyone on the planet is hunting down Spider-Main. Each level is well designed and you'll find yourself playing for lengthy hours completing each one to progress to the next to find out what actually happens in the end. There are a vast amount of moves that Spider-Man can use throughout the game, such as the Spider web-sling to get you from building to building. The levels are vast and different, for example at the start you'll need to swing from building to building to get to a bank, once you get there the perspective changes and you'll find yourself ascending a building with a helicopter firing everything he has got to stop you from reaching the top. Other levels see you fighting baddies on top of a moving train, if you fall off you need to start again which can be frustrating, especially if you are near the end.

Technically the game is superb, whilst the graphics may not seam that impressive for a Dreamcast game, they do create that comic book atmosphere. What really does stand out is the corny but highly funny humor, which is used throughout the game, you'll find yourself chuckling to yourself throughout the game. Thanks to the non-repetitive gameplay, Spider-Man will keep you gripped making you play that little but more till you complete each level. An added bonus is the extra's that are hidden in the game, as you progress you will unlock new costumes as well as interesting information about the Spider-Man franchise.

Spider-Man is a great pick-up-and-play game and for fans of the comic it really is a must have. With simple yet addictive levels you could easily sit down and play for hours on end.
