Spartan Mini Review

Spartan is an empire-building strategy game set in the Ancient Greek period, which is the third in a series of empire-building strategy games that include the best-selling Legion and Chariots of War.

For the average strategy player this could be seen as probably too deep and extensive compared to your average offering, which in itself is a contradiction. When gamers are looking for more gameplay and interesting ideas that extend the normal boundaries you would expect Spartan to be more widely acclaimed. Perhaps it is the slight focus on in game mechanics over graphical innovations (although the graphics are good) that give it less prominence.

Spartanās own innovation is its attention to detail; there are over 100 nations, with 60 different troop types, across 10 diverse ethnic and cultural groups all with their own mannerisms. The Battle Engine is able to create both the kind of stats and behavioural differences that the highly tuned strategy gamer will pick up instantly!

The mission objectives on offer are varied and the full Grand Campaign is extensive and impressive! All the nuances and intricate details that you would and would not expect are included, from sending diplomats to befriend your neighbour and then using them to your own advantage, is but one of the clever ticks you can undertake!

While the game expands and you develop your village into a large and more powerful one, researching and trading will work side-by-side and are part of the master plan! The interface is straightforward and dare we say in intuitive only if you get to grips understanding a number of rudiments of the game, which in itself take time to sink it!

We would not say that if you fancied a strategy game with a difference this would appeal but we would say if you find a number of strategy games not complex, taxing or resourceful enough then this would suit better!

Spartan is extraordinary from the perspective of any old warhorse of a strategy player. It has graphical polish, longevity and some well crafted ideas that other developers should take note of!
