We take a look at the sequel to Smugglers Run, Hostile Territory.
Smugglerâs Run was one of the launch titles for the PlayStation 2, a year on and the sequel is now upon us. Whilst the original wasnât exactly the most addictive game the sequel is promising much more. Read on to find out what we thought of the sequel.
Smugglerâs Run 2 puts you in control of fast vehicles ranging from the fast yet unstable buggy to Quad Bikes and anti-tank military vehicles. All Vehicles take damage and parts fly off during collisions with interactive obstacles. There are a total of 40 missions throughout the game offering different styles of gameplay from simple delivery errands to hostile enemy encounters. There is also 10 chasing missions and 20 mini player games.
There are a total of 2 new maps: Russia and Vietnam, complete with palatial temples, ancient ruins, prosperous fishing towns and small bombed out villages. The environments are one of the most impressive elements to the game as they are all fully interactive, they are also very large and it is possible to drive to any point you see in the distance, however there are a number of hazards you will need to watch out for including minefields, crossfire, and avalanches, they really do come alive around you. The weather conditions can also change throughout the game, rain may start to fall making it harder to keep control of your vehicle and in some of the desert levels sandstorms will decrease your visibility. Some missions see you playing at night time, where you need to use night vision goggles to see what you are doing, however whilst it may sound like a nice addition it does become quite frustrating as controlling the vehicles and finding destinations become incredibly tricky.
The game runs at a constant high 60Hz speed throughout, however the lack of detail will want you crying for more. The graphics arenât exactly the best we have seen recently on the PlayStation 2 and the textures are bland and uninspiring. If youâve played the original youâll know what to expect. There are some nice video cut scenes throughout the game, which unfold the storyline, and help to illustrate what goals you need to achieve in the missions. The developers have licensed a number of tracks that are used throughout the game; the sound effects are also quite impressive with bangs and bashes as you screech into walls. The A.I of the enemy has also been incredibly enhanced, where they actually make smart decision on how to bring you down, however you can take them out by using an oil slick, smoke screen, exploding kegs or use a nitro-boost to pull away from your enemies.
