Silent Hill 2 Preview

Be prepared to be disturbed as soon you'll once again be entering the twisted and surreal town of Silent Hill.
Like the original it's shaping up to be a perfect blend of horror and suspense, that will keep you on edge from the moment you start playing and never fully answer your questions about the dark world you've entered.
You take the role of James Sanderland, who has just received a cryptic letter from his wife beckoning him to meet her in Silent Hill. What would normally be a comforting and romantic letter scares James as his wife has been dead for three years. The mystery of the letter compels him to return to the surrealistic and macabre horror of Silent Hill.
Visually this game is shaping up to be something of a rarity on the Playstation 2, simply put it looks magnificent. The graphics have a grainy feel to them which lend to the old horror movie feel and helps to suck you in, there is some wonderful texture work and thanks to James' flashlight some excellent lighting effects to really show off, in terms of overall look it's definitely more cinematic then video-game.
The camera movement within the game is excellent and from the demo I've played helps to set the tone rather then hinder with play. In one example the camera starts off from a fixed high position and as the character moves the camera swoops down to below him whilst looking foward, it's hard to explain but really works well.
Anyone familar with this type of genre will be instantly familiar with the controls and general game idea, thankfully James has been equipped with a strafing manouever which lends to the realism of movement and helps to relieve some of the frustration that these type of game controls often create.
Konami are keen to promote the sound system they're using in Silent Hill 2, and what better game to showcase it. Sound is a major factor in any great horror movie and Konami know this, they've come up with a way that creates Dolby Surround on stereo speakers. With all the noise that occurs on a packed E3 floor I wasn't able to check how well the effect worked, but from what I've learnt from other people the end result is stunning.
Comments
Get ready to be scared again, this game will be fantastic and a must have title for anyone with a PS2 or who enjoys surrealistic horror akin to the likes of David Lynch.
