One of the best multiplayer and sports titles ever is back...
The sequel to one of the finest sport titles ever created is finally upon us. Segaās Virtua Tennis was the surprise hit of many peopleās list last year, itās deceptively simplistic nature hid one of the most playable games in years, plus the multiplayer mode was to die for.
So a year later, whatās changed? Well the big inclusion is female players; alas players looking forward to having Anna Kournikova under the control of your joystick will be disappointed, as the feisty Russian one didnāt make the line-up, however 16 of her international colleagues did, including the likes of; Venus Williams; Serena Williams; Monica Seles; Lindsay Davenport; Magnus Norman; Patrick Rafter; Tim Henman and Tommy Hass, to name but a few.
Hitmaker has also tinkered and tailored with the controls, giving a far greater depth of shots available. The developers have replaced the lob button with a slice shot move, with lobs now being executed by pressing both the buttons together. It lends a lot more depth to the game, resulting in more realistic action, but keeps the same simplistic control mechanism that made the first game so appealing to everybody.
Concerns arose around ECTS regarding the floaty nature of the ball and gameplay, however that has been ironed out for a much faster pace akin to the original.
The World Circuit mode has been severely revamped, resulting in a far greater single player experience. Players now have to create their own characters, through an extensive player create mode and build up their skill through a series of tournaments and training scenarios. Players are now based on four different attributes; Footwork; Serve; Stroke and Volley. Playing through and completing the training missions will increase these and level up in an RPG manner. The whole event is now based on a calendar, so youāve got to ensure your character is at the right level to compete in the tournaments. It adds a sense of tactics and strategy that was missing from the original, and makes for some great single player gaming, however VT is always about the multiplayer mode.
As with the original there is a fantastic learning curve. At first youāll dispatch opponents without even noticing, however begin to rise up the ranks and youāll need to pull of every trick in the book just to keep up.
Which is the true beauty about tennis, behind the surface lies a real tactical sport that many may dismiss; huge variations in the style of play, different techniques, etc⦠and thankfully itās all been wonderfully recreated in VT2.
Visually this is leaps and bounds over the original, gone are the Munster look-alikes and in are frighteningly realistic portrayals of their real-life counterparts. The superb animation from the first game has been enhanced, making for one of the best looking sports titles around.
