Second Sight - First Look Preview

By Chris Leyton on 07/05/2004 Codemasters feed us details on this hot title from the TimeSplitters guys...

Codemasters today confirmed that it has secured the global publishing rights to Second Sight, the latest title from the TimeSplitters creators Free Radical.

Scheduled for release later in the year on Playstation2, Xbox and GameCube, Second Sight merges stealth aspects into an action/adventure and claims to redefine the standards for stealth/action games.

The title stems from the main characters incredible psychic abilities, players can expect to be able to psychically influence characters and remotely manipulate objects; whilst the game offers multiple approaches to completing missions, be it via stealth, dramatic gunplay, psychic powers or a combination of all three.

The story sees players taking the role of John Vattic, as he awakens from a coma in a US medical facility where he has been subjected to traumatic surgery and experimentation. He doesn’t know his name, he can’t remember his past, all he knows is that his only hope for survival is to escape and unravel the mystery that has led to his imprisonment.

Second Sight uses dramatic concepts to build up the tension, such as haunting flashbacks, which are experienced as fully playable episodes within the game; whilst we’re promised that the further Vattic progresses through the game, the more he learns of his past and ultimately uncovers a fatal chain of events leading to a sinister conspiracy.

The games main innovation comes from a dual-narrative which runs through the game and weaves between both the present and the past; resulting in players actions from the past having direct consequences in the present, allowing a unique interaction between the player and the story as Vattic’s destiny is changed throughout the course of events based on the players actions.

Vattic’s telekinetic powers allow players to shift objects and terrify on-looking guards, whilst players can expect to learn new abilities and develop existing powers; for example players can upgrade their basic telekinesis beyond simply moving objects, to be able to lift enemies and smash them against the scenery as they scream for mercy!

Further psychic powers revealed later in the game include Healing – use psychic powers to replenish health; Projection – send your spirit out of your body and possess other characters; Charm – alter the minds of individuals, to fool them that you’re not there and finally Psi-Blast to send a destructive shockwave towards your enemy.

However it’s not all about mind-tricks and the fun you can have with telekinesis powers, as players can expect to get their hands on 13 different weapons, including pistols and sniper rifles, which can be used in conjunction with your psychic powers for unpredictable results.
