Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection Review

Having been impressed by the Xbox version, can Wolfenstein survive without multiplayer modes???

Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the Xbox provided us with hours of entertainment, predominantly because of the Xbox Live! online multiplayer modes; had we just been given a one-player game without the ability to go online with lots of other people we would have had a far different opinion on the game. Unfortunately the Playstation2 version is just that ā“ no online modes, heck itās not even got splitscreen co-op or deathmatchā¦

When playing RtCW, you canāt help but get the feeling youāve seen it all before; having grown up on a staple diet of high quality first-person-shooters, from Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, GoldenEye, Half Life, Deus Ex, Operation Flashpoint to Halo and with Half Life 2 and Doom 3 showing the future direction of the genre, how does Return To Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection stack up?

Somewhere near the bottom of the pile, to put it bluntly. When playing through this game for review I just wanted to be playing something else, like TimeSplitters 2. Two years ago on the PC this was an average game with its main strength being the multiplayer modes. Now it looks worse, it plays the same and quite frankly we just expect that little bit more from our first person shooters these days.

Okay so this isn't meant to be that realistic, but damn, you can lean but you can't shoot and lean, you could do this in GoldenEye - that's getting on for five years old! The graphics are poor; textures suffer from a lack of detail and the dirty PS2 syndrome, whilst the PAL conversion is quite frankly dreadful.

Gameplay is simple and hasnāt evolved since the foundations laid out in Doom. You shoot, you shoot, and you click something; die, shoot, run around - been there done that. The plot is crazy but quite frankly we want to see heavy themes dealt with a little more subtly. Okay so the notion that Himmler and Hitler et al were creating some sort of super army is interesting. But having played things like Medal of Honor we feel that this just misses the mark. The biggest problem is that shooting everything that moves is just getting boringā¦

Tides of War on the Xbox gave us a real taste of team based online gaming and that totally surpassed the one-player experience. Operation Resurrection gives us a taste of a mediocre two-year-old PC first person shooter that suffers from the conversion ā“ based on the Quake III engine, itās fair to say that Quake III on the Dreamcast looked far better than this.

The kick animation is no better than in Duke Nukem 3D. The gameplay is not a patch on TimeSplitters 2 or Halo and there is no replayability, no innovation, it's not even wrapped up in amazing graphics. Okay so the controls are alright, and we do like kicking down doors and spraying a room with a machine gun. But then we didn't have to pay for the game.
