Resident Evil is back on the PlayStation 2, with the first in the series to be fully online.

With Sony turning their attention to online gaming, Capcom will be at the front with their future release of Resident Evil Outbreak, taking full advantage of the Broadband adaptor.

Whilst GameCube owners seam to have all the fun when it comes to the Resident Evil franchise, Capcom have been quietly working on a new title that will see you fighting to survive the horrors of Raccoon City with up to 3 other human players at once, this time however on the PlayStation 2. Resident Evil Outbreak is one of Capcomâs first titles allowing gamers to play cooperatively online, using the PlayStation 2âs broadband adaptor youâll be able to logon and select a group of three other human players to team up with. Once you have selected your character from the 8 available you are ready to start the adventure.

Resident Evil Outbreak tells the dramatic story of an outbreak caused by a secret biological weapon infecting the people of Raccoon City. Citizens are turning into flesh-eating zombies that swarm the streets. Players wage war against the pharmaceutical giant, Umbrella who is responsible for the events leading up to this disaster. In the shadow of this nightmare are a few desperate survivors. Players take the role of these distraught few as they search for traces of life. They must find a way to get out of this city before the government quarantines the entire area by firing a missile and destroying all proof of existence.

The version we saw at E3 utilised a standard LAN network, whilst waiting for what seamed like ages we finally got our chance to try the game out. Joined by the producer of the game we were very excited. The game began in a Restaurant, where all the selected human characters were hanging about, the door suddenly banged open and a strange person stumbled in; with their head hanging down, and their legs dragging along the floor you know what is going to happen here. Without going into too much detail thus spoiling the story, hell breaks out and suddenly you find yourself searching for any weapon you can use to protect yourself. One of the beautiful additions to Outbreak is the large selection of weapons you can use, from the standard weapons to nail guns and destructible items such as brushes and wooden sticks. Team work here becomes very important, as quickly the area is filled with Zombies, running away will no longer help you as for the first time in a Resident Evil game, the enemies can now chase you, even through doors! We saw a scene where a human character was low on energy, so she decided to run into a small room to find some herbs, however two zombies saw this and followed her, at first they were simply banging on the door before they discovered how to open it, after a few seconds they busted through surprising the women and eventually killing her. Being the true hero we went in afterwards, after struggling to kill the zombies with a brush, we gave the fallen character some health. The version we played allowed us to recover dead characters by giving them health, however from a press release issued to us at the same time it stated that once you die you become a Zombie and your mission changes instead of trying to survive as the hunted you become the hunter seeking down the human characters.

One of the first things that strike you about Resident Evil Outbreak is the quality of the graphics. Without the use of pre-rendered backgrounds, Outbreak is presented in full 3D complete with roaming camera angles. Surprisingly the 3D backgrounds match any pre-rendered backgrounds we have seen on previous titles, and the lighting effects are very impressive too. The character models are equally as striking, considering there is four human player characters on screen at once as well as a selection of enemies and the environments we are very impressed with what Capcom have managed to produce from the dating PlayStation 2.

Like Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil Outbreak will see you and your team making several selections throughout the game. Scenarios are generated for the player by the game with storylines branching off in new directions based on those decisions you make.
