Resident Evil: Code Veronica Review

Resident Evil returns to scare the crap out of you with improved visuals, sound and an overall more enjoyabvle experience.

Be afraid... be very afraid, Resident Evil Code Veronica is out and ready to scare the pants off you. Starring Clair Redfield from Resident Evil 2, and her brother Chris, players survive another test of their zombie shooting skills. But Resident Evil Code: Veronica (REC:V) isnāt just a zombie blast fest, itās got a great story too. It has twists and turn that put most Hollywood films to shame. It even has a love story of sorts, making the slower parts of the plot a little more interesting.

Control is similar to other Resident Evil games. There are a couple new moves, which include an auto-aim feature, and a 180-degree turn. After getting the hang out of flipping 180 and hitting the aim button, youāll start exterminating zombies with the best of them. You'll spend most of the game solving puzzles and killing zombies, but thereās a lot more to it then that. The puzzles are much more life like now. One puzzle has you use a crane to move a crate that is blocking your way. This new approach to puzzles makes the game feel less, well, game like. I used to hate all the tedious puzzles that plagued the last games, but now I enjoy solving these real world problems. The story and game play are so good that you'll spend hours playing and not know it. Don't worry about ending to soon, because this is the longest Resident Evil yet. Clocking in at over 20 hours for a veteran-gamer this is by far the best Resident Evil experience ever!

I can't say any really bad things about this game but I do know of a couple glitches. I had to replay most of the game because I left behind a crucial item behind. It would have helped if the game didn't let me go until I had it. Plus since you play as Claire and Chris, and share their items and weapons, sometimes you go up against a boss without the firepower you need. I lost and had to replay, but I didn't make the same mistake. So long as you donāt save over the same file all the time, youāll do fine. Again this could have been avoided with some extra developer insight.

The game ends with a hint to a sequel, but after finishing the game youāre not only hungry for more, but are awarded with an extra mode. It's called battle mode and depending on your actions during the game you could play it with a first person perspective (FPS). Playing Resident Evil as a FPS is an experience that all fans will enjoy. With alternative costumes and a FPS mode, REC:V has the most replay value then any other RE to date.

REC:V has the best graphics of any game out for the DC right now. The story is told both through FMV and in game graphics. The FMV is very good, even better then FFVIII's in fact. The opening FMV is so cinematic you'll think your watching the next Will Smith movie. The in game cinemas are also good and often look as good as the FMV. That's right REC:V's graphics are so good I have a hard time distinguishing between them and FMV. Everything from rotting zombies to bungee armed āBanderāsā look great and have more detail then any other game out right now. Capcom/Sega have set a new standard for survival horror, and games in general.

The sound effects are great and varied. Everything from moans to bullets hitting flesh has been rendered perfectly, and in 3D. I played most of the game with wireless headphones, and let me tell you, I got scared more times then once just by the sound effects. The music is great and I love it. REC:V has moody, heart pounding, and emotional music it even has cool military marches. The music is as varied as the scenes. It even changes on the fly to pump you up during a fight, and then it slows down to a calm, mysterious, melody. The music and sound effects are a good addition to this already great game.

All Resident Evil fans should play this game. Heck if you like games at all you should play this game. Buy it, rent it, barrow it, it doesnāt matter so long as you play this game. REC:V is the best Resident Evil yet and the best game on the Dreamcast. I havenāt been so engrossed into a game like this since Panzer Dragoon Saga and Final Fantasy VII. If this is what we can expect of future Resident Evils then get exited now.
