Resident Evil 3: Nemesis Review

Many titles in the Survival Horror genre have come and gone but the only series that really stands out is the Resident Evil series.
Remember when Shinji Makimi, the mastermind behind Capcoms famed Survival Horror series, stated that the third installment in the Resident Evil series was going to be soley made for the fans? Well trust me, he wasn't kidding. Mixing engrossing gameplay, edge of your seat horror, and a nick for making you jump out of your seat, he has created something truly unique, while staying close to the tested and true formula from the previous Resident Evil games.
You take control of Jill Valentine, the original superchick from the first game, in her quest to get out of Racoon City-alive. Managing to live through the whole ordeal she decides to leave town on a vacation, well obviously she didn't leave quick enough. Nemesis takes place both 24 hours before, and 24 hours after Resident Evil 2, and truly gives you a different perspective on all the horror that has happened in Racoon City. The first two games had you indoors 98% of the time but in RE 3, things take a different approach. In Nemesis, the whole city is yours to uncover, going from parks, clock towers, back alleys, and a very familiar Police Station-just can't put my finger on where I've seen it before....
In RE 3 you will find multiple paths to take and a huge amout of exploration that you will need to do, this will definitly push the replay bar way up there. In one example, you know the nemesis is near, you have two options, stay to do battle with the Tyrant, risking death, losing some aid sprays and ammo in turn for a special item, or you can blind the Tyrant with a nearby spot light and push him off of the bridge, getting no special item in return but retaining all of your health and ammo. It's this kind of depth that makes the game stand out and above all other Survial Horror games out there.
Wanna know what it's like to play as a Bad Ass mercenary from the -Biohazzard Counter Measures Force-? No problem, this game gives you that opportunity. In fact that part is the real turning point in this game. It happens when an encounter with the deadly Tyrant almost proves fatal, and Carlos Oliveira comes to your rescue. As you are unconsious at the hands of the Tyrant, Carlos comes to your aid and you take control of him as you search for a cure for Jill. This is not the only time you will see Carlos, as you often cross his path and he might be of aid to you in fending of a hoard of meanies before they have a chance to do some serious damage on you.
The zombie count in this game has also been improved. In RE2 you basically only had about three zombies to fend off at a time, now there are upwards to ten(!!) on screen at a time, all walking at a different pace, some slow, some super fast. Enemies' AI has been fine tuned beautifully in this game. Not only are the enemies smarter, but they are much harder to kill, taking as much as 10 rounds to knock down. But don't worry, Capcom made sure you are comfortable with a wide array of weapons for you to wreak havoc with, and sometimes, there are even nearby barrels you can shoot to explode on unweary nasties.
Much like the dreaded Tyrant from RE2, there's a new Evil terror in town, and he is out to make sure every S.T.A.R.S. member is dead, and unfortunatly for you, Jill is a member of this special police force. The Monster's nick name is the Nemesis, and as you wade Jill around in town, you always feel an uneasiness and can almost smell his presence. He is around you all the time, and is ready to attack you when you are most defenseless.
Before I end this review I will leave you with some of the downfalls. First of the completion time in this game stands at about 15 hours. You can almost already here the people who complained about Metal Gear Solid's length bickering right now. Granted there are reasons to go back and play through it again, live through the story, find all the extras and taking the different paths you missed your first time around. Another complaint is that it mirrors it's predecessor a little too much. It won't be long before other Resident Evil knock offs become bigger and better, let's just hope the next installment is something truly genuine.
Many titles in the Survival Horror genre have come and gone but the only series that really stands out is the Resident Evil series. What a reputation to live up too. The question on every ones mind is, How does Resident Evil 3: Nemesis rank up against the other Horror titles in the genre? Well let's just say we have a new King of Horror Survival on the block, he goes by the name of---NEMESIS---
