Rayman 3: Hoodlums Havoc Preview

We take a first look at the limbless hero's latest adventure...

Although Rayman has got its equal share of lovers and haters, you canāt deny that the limbless hero has staked his claim as a platform hero alongside the likes of Sonic and Mario. In total his games have spanned across 10 different formats; sold more then 11 million copies and won critical acclaim for its stylised French design and strong gameplay.

Rayman 3: Hoodlums Havoc is the sequel to the hugely popular and critically acclaimed Dreamcast title, which was eventually ported to the Playstation2. Not one to rest on their laurels, Ubisoft have got some big changes in store for the limbless one; take a look as we round up the facts known thus far.

The story tells of the once peaceful Crossroads of Dreams; a place of heavenly bliss where calm, happiness and the joy of life seemed to reign forever. That is until one Red Lum decided to transform himself into a cantankerous ball of fluff; his name was Andre and he wanted to conquer the World! To this end, Andre transformed all of the other Red Lums into Black Lums; using hair from animals, the Black Lums weaved costumes for themselves and became the legion of Hoodlums, out to spread mischief and idiocy throughout the Crossroads. Step in the limbless hero, to save the peaceful Crossroads of Dreams and put an end to the wicked schemes of the Hoodlums.

Although the game bears striking similarities to the previous Rayman title, the game now places more emphasis on combat; to this extent Rayman now has five different special abilities that will help him through his adventure.

  • The Heavy Metal Fist: The Heavy Metal Fist gives Rayman the power to blast Hoodlum barricades into rubble. And in combat, Rayman can use it to serve up a spiky knuckle sandwich to enemies.
  • Lockjaw: Way more than just a grappling hook, the LockJaw is a razor-toothed chomper that can latch onto enemies and deliver a nasty bite.
  • Throttle Copter: Fire up the Throttle Copter and warp away into the unknown reaches of Raymanās world. Thereās no telling what kind of wackiness this turbo-charged transport will youāll drop into.
  • Shock Rocket: A remote controlled rocket that allows Rayman to take out enemies from a distance and activate hard-to-find switches.
  • Vortex: Causes everything Rayman shoots to spiral down to the ground in a mini-vortex.

All of the 20 different enemies that Rayman encounters will have a different technique to beat them, unlike most platformers where a variation on the bottom-bouncing technique usually suffices. Whilst we've yet to really check Rayman 3 out in any extensive form, we're hoping that the game will push the genre forward in a number of different ways; this so called 'advanced tactical combat system' being just one of those.

Despite the changes, Rayman 3 will feature the trademark features that we've come to expect from the series. The high presentation standards have taken an upswing, with the inclusion of Billy West (Futurama, Looney Tunes) and John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge, Super Mario Bros) signed on to provide the voice acting of Rayman's buddies Globox and Murphy.

We can also expect the same luscious levels, brought to life in vivid colour and populated by all manner of weird and wacky things. Rayman 2 was arguably the first platformer to introduce mini-games with such an impact; these have returned along with a range of unlockable bonuses, downloadable content and a range of multiplayer maps to ensure you'll be playing the latest Rayman title for some time.
