Ratchet & Clank is the latest game and first PS2 title to come FROM Spyro creators Insomniac Games.

Ratchet & Clank is the latest title to come from Spyro the Dragon creators Insomniac Games, utilising the same graphics engine and comedy duo formula as Jak & Daxter, you canāt help but feel youāve seen it all somewhere before.

We took play of the latest build at suffice to say it is similar in most manners to Naughty Dogās title, however there are a few differences, in particular Ratchet & Clank places emphasis on combat and the different weapons and gadgets youāll obtain.

The game is a fusion of sci-fi meets 9:00 morning childrenās TV, think Blade Runner crossed with Disney and youāre somewhere near to the style of visuals, presentation and humour, it works well from what weāve seen, better then Jak & Daxter though is debatable, weāll have to play it more before we can decide.

The game tells the story of a forgotten planet in a forgotten backwater of a forgotten galaxy lives Ratchet, a young, talented mechanic, who dreams of one day using his abilities to quit his boring homeworld and set off in search of adventure.

That day is not as far off as he thinks. A polluted planet called Belchworld, inhabited by an ugly race known as the Blarg, is ruled by the Big Bad Boss, who has come up with a slightly unusual solution to his planetās problems. He plans to build a new world using the best parts of all the other planets. And if the inhabitants of those planets donāt agree, theyāll just have to deal with his fearsome army of Blarg warriors.

Meanwhile, in one of the factories manufacturing the Bossās robot army, a computer glitch creates Clank, a highly intelligent robot with that strangest of things, a conscience. Discovering Big Bad Bossās evil plans, he flees the factory to look for help, pursued by heavily armed ships that eventually catch him and shoot him down - over Ratchetās planet.

Brought together by fate, Ratchet and Clank are now presented with the minor task of stopping the Big Bad Boss and saving the galaxyā¦

As with Jak & Daxter you control one character, Ratchet, whilst the other helps out, some missions will see you take control of the little robot to break up the game occasionally. Clank is a little robot that clings onto the back of Ratchet, as you progress through the game you can buy upgrades for him which will aid you in your quest. Clank can be equipped with rotor blades to gift you the ability to hover, a thrustpack allowing you to fly and a hydropack for swimming underwater. OK so theyāre kind of generic power-upās that may not add much to the genre, however theyāre neatly implemented and work well in the context of the game.

The gameās stars are the weapons youāll collect, amongst the vast array of weapons to collect are the remarkable Bomb Glove, the Bolt Blaster, a Suck Cannon, a mind-blowing Morpharay and, of course, the aptly-named Devastator. Gadgets also play a large part in the game, including Hoverboards and the very cool Magneboots, which allow you to walk on metal surfaces even when facing upside down.

Because Ratchet & Clank has been developed using the same engine as Jak & Daxter, the game features the same extensive seamless levels that impressed so much before. Unfortunately Ratchet & Clankās havenāt come off so impressive at this point, they feel sparse and uninteresting compared to the splendour of Naughty Dogās level design. Rather then feeling like whole worlds, these feel like little islands all linked together. The same can be said of the visuals in comparison, thereās nothing particularly wrong about them, itās just weāve already seen better in Jax & Daxter. Iām not sure whether thereās anything wrong with our cables or PS2, as it certainly doesnāt look as nice as the screens released so far, whilst the lack of on-screen icons makes me believe that these are in fact renders of in-game action!!!
