Get ready for arcade thrills and spills in Rally Fusion: Race of Champions...

It seems every publisher under the sun has a rally game out or in development, earlier in the week we announced that EA BIG were moving into the genre with Shox, Infogrames have recently released V-Rally 3, Codemasters are set to release the eagerly awaited Colin McRae 3 later in the year, whilst Activision and Climax have set to work on Rally Fusion: Race of Champions.

Being based on the prestigious Michelin Race of Champions, which is held annually in the Canary Islands, the game is focussed on the arcade end of the spectrum along the lines of Rallisport Challenge or the classic Sega Rally.

As with Digital Illusions title, Rally Fusion: Race of Champions is set to include a number of varying modes, joining the traditional rally modes will be the likes of Hill-Climb, Rally X, Circuit and Elimination, giving plenty of variety and providing scope for some serious multiplayer fun. The main bulk of the game however will come in the Career and Race of Champions modes, these will pit players against 20 of the biggest names in rallying such as Marcus Gronholm from Finland and Didier Auriol from France, across eight different locations around the world. Progression through the game is heavily focussed on unlocking extras through the RoC mode, doing this will open up new cars, courses, co-drivers and a variety of other unlockables, which should lengthen the longevity of the title.

The license has brought an impressive line-up of licensed cars, from leading manufacturers such as Peugeot, Toyota and Saab. Each of which can be knocked to pieces courtesy of an impressive damage model that will see body parts flying everywhere, particularly in the games many multiplayer modes.

Whilst the game has a license and licensed cars, it is first and foremost an arcade racer, something to pick up and play with you mates. To this extent courses are designed in the Sega Rally school of design, featuring long winding bends to slide around rather then the tight twisty curves featured in the recent simulations.
