Rainbow Six Review

Based on the Tom Clancy novel of the same name, Rainbow Six is a first person shooter with elements of stragety and stealth.

The PC version was a great success and added a new twist to the run of the mill blasting common in games like Doom and Quake. Now the Playstation will get a taster of what PC gamers have been experiencing.

The action takes place in Corgo where employees of a national company have been taken hostage by rebels which leads to other locations such as the Brazillian rainforest. Houses of Parliament, Swiss banks and chemical factories. Rainbow Six also has a very engaging plot full of conspiracies and global warfare.

Unlike many first person shooters, you get to control a team of three soldiers thrust into terrorist locations. Each mission has its ownvobjective which can vary from rescuing hostages and killing terrorists although later missions can involve infiltrating enemy territory without being uncovered. But before you can get into the thick of the action, a plan of attack has to be made. A map screen is displayed which shows the position of your team and the destination to be reached. Here you must plan your route and decide how you are going to approach the tasks at hand. There is however a quick start option so if you really can't be bothered planning your way through the game then you can just enter the missions with the default settings.

Stragety is a key element to the gameplay and without it you will be killedinstantly. The outcome of each mission depends very much on how well you perform. Go in guns blazing and you'll be pumped full of lead before you have time to think. Take the subtle approach and you will be much more successful.

But despite all this emphasis on stragety, there is a fair bit of action to participate in. There are plenty of weapons available such as an M-16, CAR-15, grenades and hand guns to wipe out thos bad guys. Each weapon has a sniping mode like in Goldeneye although they are much more devestating. An enemy soldier can be killed with just one shot as can a member of your team so gameplay is very intense.

The other members of your team are intelligent enough to protect you should an enemy be creeping up behind you. They also have the ability to keep themselves safe should things go awry. Unfortuantely, such intelligence also applies to the opposition which varies depending on which difficulty level has been chosen. Should they hear a strange noise they will come out to investigate or duck for cover if under attack.
Sadly, this is where we come to the first of Rainbow Six's many faults. Rescuing the hostages which are littered throughout the game is extremely difficult. Basically, they have problems negotiating objects and noy just little objects either but all objects. You'll be sneaking through the game doing great, sniping foe after foe, when suddenly you'll notice that your hostage has gone missing, retracing your steps back through the enemy could be deadly but you're here to save hostages, that's your mission, and the long trawl back through the enemy begins. Chances are you'll be killed more times going back for hostages then you will moving forward in the game.

The graphics are another major flaw of the game. They look so appaling that it's hard to feel any tension when shooting what looks more like a cardboard cut-out than an uzi-wielding terrorist. Everything from the tip of your shotgun to the many walls of the many long, long corridors are rough with glitches in the graphics. Think Mission Impossible on the N64 and you'll have an idea of how unfinished Rainbow Six on the Playstation feels.

It does manage to generate a degree of atmosphere, though, through the wonderful sound effects. Trudging through the corridors there's nothing between you and the enemy but the sound of a pin, one false move and you're as good as dead. That's about ll it does though and trust me it shouldn't do much else as Rainbow Six is a disgrace to the Playstation, it's not even a tenth of the game that the PC version was.
