Set amongst an Alien attack on a Mars colony, can you as E.Z Wheeler save the day???

LucasArts today announced an original third-person action/adventure title, set for release on both the PS2 and GameCube.

RTX Red Rock is set 100 years in the future on Red Rock, mankindâs first colony on Mars. The game opens in the wake of an alien attack on Red Rock, thwarted Earthâs leaders call on Radical Tactics Expert (RTX) Eugene Zeno âEZâ Wheeler as their best hope.

Players take the role of EZ, a member of the militaryâs special forces, the smartest and toughest members of the armed services. The game begins when Wheeler is sent on a reconnaissance mission to Marsâ inner moon, Phobos, to monitor the movements of the L.E.D.s, a ruthless alien species who have ransacked the colony. Fearing that everyone is dead, Wheeler quickly discovers that this is not the case as he receives a distress call from Cimmeria Rajan, Red Rock's young and beautiful Chief Colony Officer. Contrary to the military's worst fears, she and a handful of others survived the alien invasion. Wheeler quickly descends to the planet's surface for a sustained rescue operation that challenges him to swim through underground waterways, cross Mars' frozen deserts, penetrate the colony ruins, and sneak into alien ships, battling L.E.D.s at every turn.

While this sounds like a wish for death, Wheeler has a number of tricks up his sleeve. Wheeler has a number of unique mechanised abilities, granted to him through a series of medical operations to mend previous combat injuries. Wheeler's synthetic right arm is both tool and weapon, upgradeable to grappling hook (Bionic Commando), taser, grenade launcher, and more. Likewise, his synthetic left eye is sensitive to special wavelengths and can be used to locate and target hidden aliens, identify traps, and uncover power-ups throughout the game's 10 levels. However his most important item is the I.R.I.S, a sentient PDA device that serves a number of purposes. This portable computer with a female personality can be inserted into ports on robots and control panels bringing them to life and assisting Wheeler in his mission.

From our initial look the game appears to be the standard mix of combat, exploration and puzzles. The game spans 10 levels across a variety of different locations; some will see you donning a spacesuit to explore outside featuring huge canyons, to interior labyrinth like locations. Combat appears to be relatively straightforward, a targeting reticule reflects how accurate your shot is â“ the larger the target, the less accurate you are. The puzzles will be a mixture of the traditional âfind key A/open door Aâ, with those that will require the use of I.R.I.S to take control of the different robots on offer.

Finally the game will feature a two-player split-screen multiplayer mode for head-to-head battles, capture the flag tournaments, and exhilarating races in some of the game's many vehicles.

The game is being developed primarily for the PS2; visually the game already offers some impressive results. Thanks to the custom engine, which makes heavy use of the PS2âs Vector Unit, the game features some intricate detail and large environments, the end result is an unusually crisp looking PS2 title. Hopefully this wonât mean another sloppy GameCube port, the fact that the team have always planned to release the game on both systems should be a good one.
