R-Type Final Mini Review

Is there anything more that can be said of R-Type that hasnāt been said before? The arcade side-on-scroller classic that spawned a generation of shooters, has been slightly revamped and brought up to date to push the capacity of the PS2 to its full potential. Well thatās the belief of the publisher but that aside itās a traipse back to the good old days when gameplay was the prime focus and the graphics came a distant second which would better befit this presentation on the PS2.
Put at its most basic, the game is a multi staged, grab the goodies as you waste the other alien craft, customise and improve your craft with bigger weapons as you move close to the end of the each level and face a bigger and more fearsome alien boss!
Itās about facing marauding, larger than life, alien attacking vessels; with equal and sometimes outrageous fire power and clearing each section with your own mighty arsenal! Controlling your craft from taking head on hits, colliding with bombs and other craft and projectiles, whilst lining up the prime spots on the baddies vehicles require aptitude, skill and quick reactions! Itās about staying the right side of frustration and chucking down your joy pad and thinking ahead, planning movements in what appear impossible odds with not enough space to manoeuvre! Plenty of finger tapping, palm sweating, pad slipping action is on offer and the constant onscreen pyrotechnics are unabated throughout the long and eventful experience!
This 2D shooter in a 3D environment may look slightly frayed around the edges and dated in many respects but with so few proper video shooters that go back to the real roots of arcade blasting this is a nice short fix, even for those that prefer the more sophisticated game!
