AM2 take to the skies with this arcade style flight game.
Propeller Arena is a rather interesting title to come from AM2, eschewing their normal output and going for something rather more unique. After all itās not every day that you get to dogfight with a very arcade-like take on World War II era aircraft with and against your buddies.
With the emphasis firmly on fun here you choose your plane and then take to the skies, and thatās pretty much it. You donāt have to worry about landing or taking off, at least not in the Battle Royal mode, you start right in the thick of the action. To begin with you choose your plane, each different model having different strengths in speed, armour, firepower, and manoeuvrability. Once youāve chosen your plane and taken to the air you realise that this is not a simulation, not by a long shot, the emphasis here is on fun and shooting things. With large boxes floating in the sky that yield power-ups when shot, itās obvious that AM2 are not gunning for realism here. These items include things like repair kits, missile launchers, speed boosters, cloaking devices and many others that help you in your quest to destroy the opposition, or save your hide.
The main emphasis of Propeller Arena is multi-player action; whilst the one-player mode is a lot of fun it is nowhere near as enjoyable as the four-player option. However split screen is just the tip of the iceberg as online action is the real aim of Propeller Arena. Much like Alien Front Online you will be able to head online to participate in some manic gaming. Up to six people should be supported, although this could change by release and you should be able to use the Dreamcast microphone ā“ that shipped with Seaman ā“ to talk to your opponents, or shout, or grumble ā“ whatever you want to do. Hopefully the online play is not just limited to free for alls as some sort of team based combat with the microphones, as communications devices could be rather good.
Graphically things are rather good, this isnāt the most impressive Dreamcast game out there, but with the emphasis on fast-paced action where frame rate is key, and this is forgivable. The colours and designs are distinct and vibrant exuding charm from every bolt and wingtip. AM2 have made the plane styles of the 30ās and 40ās rather more contemporary with paint jobs that push the boundaries of what is camouflage.
