Flight games have always been a hard nut to crack, the limited range of objectives and over-complicated controls has resulted in the genre appealing to a SELECT few. Yu Suzuki and his talented team at AM2 are hoping to put this right with Propeller Arena
Propeller Arena removes the missions and objectives found in most flight games, instead players are put into an arena with six other opponents, the objective to dogfight your way to glory, simple as that.
Anyone expecting this to be a realistic simulation will be disappointed, Propeller Arenaâs gameplay is very much in the pick up and play style; controls are kept to a basic minimum, so youâll be pulling off loop-the-loops and barrel rolls in no time at all, whilst power-ups are scattered throughout the levels.
The game has been developed with online play as the main focus, up to six players will be able to engage in an arena at anyone time. There are modes for single play and split screen, however this is all about dialling up and just engaging in pure air-combat bliss. Alongside Alien Front Online, the game is set to use the dreamcastâs criminally underused microphone, so youâll be able to taunt and tease just before youâre about to blow somebodyâs wings off, whilst in a dire situation youâll be able to beg and whimper for your life. Youâll also be able to team up with other members; the microphone will be essential here as you bark out orders to your wingmen.
Graphically Propeller Arena is shaping up to be quite good, the arenas are expansive affairs that have no fogging or clipping issues. There is a cartoon style that runs throughout; hence levels are vibrantly coloured with huge explosions that show off some very cool lighting effects. Textures are up to dreamcast standards, however youâd expect no less from Suzuki and his team, and the game runs at a rock steady 60 FPS.
One area that is causing some noise is in the sound stakes, remember the soft rock from F355 Challenge, well it seems Suzuki is quite a fan as the same style is used here. There has been talk of changing the soundtrack for the Western market however I for one am getting quite fond of the odd bit of J-Rock.
