European gamers finally get the chance to CHECK out the Dreamcasts final swan-song, if they can find it that is...
Weāve said it for awhile but for European gamers this is truly the much-loved Dreamcastā final swan-song. As youād expect from the title, Phantasy Star Online: Ver 2.0 is more of an upgrade rather then a sequel, offering new missions, improved visuals, a couple of mini-games (deathmatch mode & lobby football) and the ability to further enhance your stats and attributes. Presumably this is what Naka-san envisioned when he created the original, if this was a PC game you know it would have been a patch.
For those not in the know, players create a character with one of the most extensive and charismatic player creations ever featured in a videogame, and then join three other players from anywhere in the world for some third-person monster killing hash and slack action. Throughout your adventures youāll collect numerous weapons and items, always keeping a look out for the ultra rare ones, and try to level up your character which increases your stats in a standard RPG fashion. Itās plain and simple, but itās gaming heavenā¦
Unfortunately the dream has turned a little sour recently, when PSO was first released the charm and appeal was easily evident as players built great teams and conversed using Sonic Teamās custom language-barrier breaker, there was a great feeling of community. Unfortunately problems soon became apparent; cheating and item stealing began to ruin the magnificent creation that Sonic Team had crafted, and to a certain extent the spell was lost forever.
Ragol is a quiet place these days, unless you have a contact list from the first game youāll find it hard to get started, rooms are locked and finding companions is a tougher task then it should be. However itās worth the effort, as the battered dream is still there to find, PSO is simple game but only one that a genius could envisage. Regrettably with the Dreamcastās demise and the stupidity of those that ruined the experience, some of the charm has been lost. Hopefully with the release on all formats PSO will come back bigger and stronger then ever, it would be the biggest injustice weāve seen in the videogames industry if PSO was left to fade away.
