Phantasy Star Online is shaping up to be the first killer online RPG, the only problem is we've got to wait for it.
In the year 2000, Sonic Team finally revived Segaās legendary RPG Phantasy Star!
āThe Pioneer Projectā ? A plan born of desperation, conceived in response to the imminent destruction of their home worlds. As plans for the evacuation began,
unmanned probes were sent into deep space to find a habitable planet. When a potential site was discovered, the first interstellar transport ship, Pioneer 1 was sent to establish a colony.
Pioneer 1 confirmed that the Planet Ragol was a suitable location, and the initial colonists started preparing the planet for the main wave of refugees, beginning with the construction of the Central Dome.

Pioneer 2 completed its long voyage with the main wave of refugees aboard. But as Pioneer 2 entered orbit and opened a communications link with the Central Dome, an enormous explosion shook the entire planet.
All contact with the thousands of men and women of Pioneer 1 was lostā¦
Sonic Team are about to change the way that we play games on-line, allowing players from all over the world to connect together and battle the dungeons which are found in Phantasy Star Online. One of the key elements to the game is the multi-lingual option allowing players with different languages to work together, fantastic!
The copy that we have received only allows us to play the offline missions. However even without the online features Phantasy Star Online is a fantastic one-player game. Right from the start you are absorbed into a world of Dragons, strange demons and lush environments.
Like I mentioned above the Speech features in Phantasy Star Online are superb. For online adventures youāll not only be able to chat via the Dreamcast keyboard, but also be able to pre-construct sentences and questions, and even design little icons which will represent sentences.
You start the game in the main hub area of Pioneer 2 space station; this is where you will spend a lot of your time, collecting data, speaking to people, receiving missions etc. At this point you can go where you wish. To get into the action you must enter The Hunterās Guild; this is where youāll receive your missions for both single and online multiplay. It is advised that you start off with the training and rescue missions; otherwise youāll get your arse severely whipped.
The graphics in Phantasy Star Online are simply stunning; from the start of the game you will find yourself concentrating too much on the graphics and the environment then playing the game itself. Because Sega expect this game to be a big seller (and it should itās fantastic), when you choose your characters there are a number of attributes you can change such as, height, weight, color tone, itās entirely up to you how your character looks.
Phantasy Star Online plays fantastically offline. The game will bring you into a real living world that will be almost impossible to exit. Playing online with friends / strangers around the world is what gamers are dreaming of.
